Help Please

3 Attachment(s)
I just quilted this quilt that was pieced by my mother when I was a kid. My DB & SIL rescued it from the farm house I grew up in. As far as I can tell it's made from feed sack material. I want to label this quilt but I'm not sure of the time frame it was made. Can any of you recognize the fabrics and give an estimate as to when it was made? She hand & machine pieced it. She also had done a portion of it in a QAYG, but I had to take it out to get the top together. So, any help will be greatly appreciated as I want to give this to my older for his birthday in June.

very nice!!!!

it's very nice, I guess you could put a little story like you told us. don't know the date, but it was pced when you were a child and the years then

ManiacQuilter2 04-13-2014 01:33 PM

I would need more details but it look like calicos in the 70s. Is that possible??? I would not myself be concern with a date. I would just hope you can get the quilt completed by your deadline. Good Luck. She is going to be overjoyed with your gift.

Wonderful quilt! If there's an appraiser in your area, that might be something to look into. He/she could not only date the quilt but appraise it for insurance purposes.

Craftnut 04-13-2014 02:28 PM

Yet another reason everyone should label all their quilts, so thanks for wanting to do so. Is there anyone left in your family that might remember her working on it?

You could also put a decade on it if you don't know the exact year. Pieced sometime in the 1970s, quilted 2014.

Misty's Mom 04-13-2014 02:36 PM

I just went ahead and made my label saying she had pieced it circa 1950s. Done. Thanks y'all

What a pretty quilt! I'm curious about the pattern. Is it a variation ofmdrunkard's path?

hugs,
Charlotte

How old are you...what years were you a kid? Isn't that about the age?

I am 64. So that was my reasoning on the date.
Yes, Charlotte it is a variation of drunkards path

barny 04-13-2014 03:54 PM

I tend to think the feed sacks are from the 30's or 40's. I remember an aunt having some of them and that was when I was 9 or 10.[in the 40's.

charlottequilts 04-13-2014 03:54 PM

I'm the same age, and in the late 50's, my grandmother made bow tie quilts with alternating squares of bubblegum pink for each of her six granddaughters. The bow ties were all 1930s-style fabrics. Our grandmothers must have had great stashes to have so many of the fabrics 20 years later.

hugs,
Charlotte

I am so glad you rescued that lovely quilt. What a wonderful and treasured birthday gift it will be! I am glad you are putting a label on it. I am 78 and I remember sewing with flour sacks. I can remember fashion shows with all of the garments made from flour sacks. Your quilt brought back fond memories.

thegoatlady 04-14-2014 06:32 AM

Looks like some 40s-50s fabrics and perhaps some older to me...

MargeD 04-14-2014 07:11 AM

What a pretty Drunkard's Path quilt. Another reason we should label our quilts. I think that I will remember when I made a certain quilt and I don't. I'm trying to keep a small photo album with pictures of the quilts I've made and when, but I'm not always current. It's a beautiful quilt.

carolynjo 04-14-2014 07:31 AM

You were right to label it the 50's because feedsack fabric was popular through the 50's.

IQ2 04-14-2014 09:39 AM

coincidentally today someone posted a link to biblical blocks and there's one called "Solomon's Puzzle". It looks like your Mom's pattern.

I think you were right in choosing to label it as the 50's. Some of the fabric prints look newer than the 30's prints. And I wanted to say what a beautiful treasure you have!

crafty pat 04-14-2014 10:16 AM

It looks like feed sack fabrics my DM used in the early 40's.

wildyard 04-14-2014 11:01 AM

Looks too pretty to be the feed sacks I wore in the 50s. Smiles, I do agree with the date tho, of late 50s for the calico type prints.

I think you're right. Now I have a label on my quilt with the wrong name :(

JanieH 04-14-2014 11:23 AM

So glad the quilt was saved and that you have labeled it! What a wonderful gift for your brother!

Alondra 04-14-2014 11:59 AM

Looks like a variation of the Drunkard's Path pattern.

My dear grandmother explained to me that the decorated sacks were woven according to what would be sold in them. Flour sacks were the finest fabric, then sugar, then grain, then feed sacks were the coarser fabrics. Baby clothes, aprons, and collars etc. were made from the finer fabrics, and coarser fabrics made warmer quilts. This was not hard and fast rules, just general use in her world. I love your quilt.

You know what the most important thing is? You have completed a top your mother started more than 50 years ago AND you labeled it with her name, etc. there are so many patterns out there and so often with multiple names, that no one is going to be worried about the pattern name. Actually if you Google Drunkards Path there are many name variations...Solomon's Puzzle being one of them. Good job, be proud of yourself! :)

Thank you. I needed that. While it never was and never will be my intention to leave the bible, church or God out of everything, it was simply an over site as to finding the name for my mom's quilt. I am at this moment trying to see if I can remove my label without damaging the quilt and replacing it with one with the correct quilt name on it.

I remember it also being called 'Dove in the Window'.

matraina 04-15-2014 07:47 AM

Can't help you there, but it really is pretty.

Cogito 04-15-2014 08:50 AM

Misty's Mom, please don't remove the label. One of the important points I was trying to share with you is that very, very often a pattern has numerous names. Sooooooo.....your pattern name is not wrong it is just one of the many variant names for that particular pattern. :)
Think of it this way.....if you are concerned that it have the "correct" name, then you might feel compelled to make a label with 7 different names just to be sure you covered all your bases! Now I'm not saying that is the exact number in this situation, but trying to illustrate how challenging that could be.

dgeskine 04-15-2014 09:09 AM

I would have figured 1950's also, I did lots of sewing in the 70's and those calico prints didn't seem to match that era. Very special quilt and quilting! I do hope we get to see the finished product. :)

JoanneS 04-15-2014 12:30 PM

You have a treasure - and how nice you are to finish it for your brother. I would guesstimate the date from how old you were when you remember her working on it. It's hard to put a date on it from the fabrics, because she may not have made it when the fabrics were printed - and they may have been from clothes no longer worn.

needles3thread 04-15-2014 12:36 PM

I love this pattern & the fabrics your mother used.

grannysewer 04-15-2014 02:41 PM

I love that you have this quilt and the memories of your mother working on it.

shirleyd 04-15-2014 06:42 PM

I love your quilt and it's wonderful that you've quilted it and have someone in the family to pass it on to. It will bring happy memories for years to come. Your mother would be so pleased you did this in her memory.
