Help! Please! Yardage for Warm Wishes Quilt

I really feel like a dummy - I used to be a bookkeeper and now I have a real problem wrapping my brain around numbers. I have never made a Warm Wishes quilt but need a quick quilt now. I have looked at lots of pictures on this board of the pattern and don't know why I've never tried one. I would like to go out today to buy fabric but the only instructions I can find are on the Quilt Makers web site and the yardage directions seem confusing and just don't seem to click with me - duh!

I want to use a purple/lavendar 6" blocks and use three strip colors - maybe a tone on tone dark purple and the second one light orchid for the 2" strips and white for the 3" strip. I am not looking forward to quilting it so I'm only planning to make it about 60' X 80" - just enough to cover the top of a queen sized bed.

Can someone please help me with the math on this. I would appreciate it soooo very much! Thanks in advance. Everyone on this board is so helpful - don't think I could quilt without your help.

here is a warm wishes with 6" blocks. it is 62x80 with the 4" border. the purple strips are cut at 2" which makes the white strips cut at 3.5", not 3". and here is the yardage suggested by EQ5.

Love the Warm Wishes pattern!

I love your color choices! Can't go wrong with shades of purple. Of course, I am a certified purple freak!! But a Warm Wishes with shades of purple will be great!

Now I'm really confused - I read somewhere that if you make the strips 2 + 3 + 2 the strip set will be 7" minus the 4 - quarter inch seams - making the strip set come out at 6". The instructions on Quilt Maker says to make the focus block 6" and the strips 2 + 3+ 2. Maybe I'm reading this all wrong. My biggest question was/is "how much yardage I need to buy and Nancy you answered that for me. Thanks a bunch! I knew someone would come to the rescue

Thanks, Dina - I hope your right. Purple isn't my preference in colors (can't really say I don't like it, but...) - it is the Granddaughters choice. And you know, we aim to please when it comes to the kids - even if they are grown kids. :)

QuiltnNan 08-12-2014 07:20 AM

if you cut the strips at 2", they finish at 1.5". the 3.5" strip will finish at 3". so 1.5+1.5+3=6.

Friday will be spent sewing the top together and I did use 7" focus fabric squares. Made the strips, measured them, then cut the butterfly print to match. Only scraps left of the print so binding will be the blue floral, blue flowers are in the main print, got real lucky to find it in the stash.

Do not know why it has taken me so long to actually use this pattern. Can't wait to do the camo one, I recommend putting this pattern to the top of everyone's list to make.

Thanks, the thing I liked about the 6" cuts was the strip blocks were cut at 3" and 2"--all easily cut with my 6" wide ruler.

Like I said - I am totally confused when it comes to numbers. I will just go buy the fabrics with QuiltnNan's fabric calculations (maybe a little extra) and do my best. Thanks again!

willferg 08-12-2014 07:42 AM

Well, if you have 3" strips and they finish at 2.5 and 2" strips and they finish at 1.5, you have 1.5 + 1.5+ 2.5 = 5.5, so if you cut your focus fabric at 6" square you'd be alright, although your quilt would be smaller.

Personally, I use cut an 8" focus fabric (7.5" finished) and then cut 2.5, 2.5, and 4 to get 2 + 2+ 3.5 and a finished 7.5" block. Eight blocks across is 60" and ten down is 75" or throw on one more row for 82.5".

I find it gets done faster with bigger blocks, but that's just my way

QuiltnNan 08-12-2014 07:43 AM

Oksewglad's blocks will finish at 5.5", not 6"

PghPat 08-12-2014 07:56 AM

I just tried a test block with 2" - 3" - 2" and it came out to a perfect 6" block. Try it!

Did you go to the site where the original pattern was posted. It just might help you with the confusion.

Your three strip set needs to be the SAME width as what size you cut your square. I have made this quilt so many times, I think I could make one with my eyes close. Once you get your strips sewn and cut, all you have to do is lay out the pattern and start sewing the rows.

yes, the sewn block is 6", but it makes a 5.5 'finished' block when sewn in the quilt.

But if I understand this correctly - and believe me I am wrong quite often - the focus fabric block is 6" unfinished and 5.5" after sewn with strip - as will the strip block be 6" unfinished and 5.5 after sewn in quilt.

I may be doing something wrong but I cut a 6" scrap piece of focus fabric and then sewed 3 strips - 2 - 3 - 2 together and they fit perfectly together. Yes, the block will come out 5.5 - but that is with the 2 - 3 - 2 strips.

dunster 08-12-2014 09:50 AM

Originally you said you wanted a 6" block. You meant 6" unfinished, but when talking about blocks it's customary to (usually) state the finished size, so that's what Nancy thought you meant. You and she are talking apples and oranges.

Quiltngolfer 08-12-2014 10:57 AM

Ok, Wilferg. What is your yardage for the 8" block quilt? What size does it turn out? I like larger blocks too. Faster quilts, more quilts made.

SueSew 08-12-2014 11:35 AM

Beautiful colors!

And about the math- I think of myself as pretty good with figures, but debits and credits and percentage profits or ratios are one thing - GEOMETRY!!! is another animal entirely. I do it the math way, then I check it with graph paper and an architect's rule just to be sure.

With finished blocks of 7.5", 8 blocks wide is 60" and 11 blocks down is 82.5. I actually like to use odd numbers, so I'd probably go 7 blocks by 9 for a lap quilt, which would be 52.5" x 72.5".

If the total number of blocks is 88, though, for the bigger size, I'd cut 8" x wof and then cut 8" blocks, getting 5 blocks per width of fabric. I would need 44 blocks total, so it would take nine rows, or 72", to yield 45 blocks (one extra). For the strips, you would need nine strips of the first color, nine of the second color, nine of the third color, stitched together along the width of fabric and then cut into 8" blocks, giving you 5 per width of fabric. Color 1 at 2.5", and you need 9 strips, is a total of 22.5" (or 24" to be safe), color 2 at 4" for 9 strips would be 36", and color 3 would be same as 1, another 22.5".

I hope that helps? If you keep in mind that with either the focus fabric or the strip sets, you'll get five 8" blocks out of a width of fabric, you can go from there. If you wanted five blocks across and five down for a baby blanket (so 25 blocks), you'd need 12 of the focus and 13 of the strips, or vice versa, depending on which fabric you wanted to be the odd one. You'd still need three strips of each fabric, which would give you 15 blocks (five from each strip, three strips) so you'd have a few extra blocks of each.

I think the 6" block is unfinished. Therefore finished it would be 5.5". The 2, 3, and 2 strips would be 6" unfinished and 5.5" finished.

Does anyone know if there are fabric charts for diff. sizes of Warm Wishes? I'm thinking of a throw size to Queen & King.
or could I just double amount from the pattern for a King? Thanks

I have that pattern and it only gave me yardage for 44"....long double (82 1/2"x 93 1/2")....twin (67 1/2" x 89 1/2")
So I'm not much help with the larger size needed. But you can download a crib size at www.quiltmaker.com/patterns.

WMUTeach 08-14-2014 04:07 AM

QuiltnNan, thank you for the example, and calculations/yardage information. I have made one Warm Wishes but did not like my color choices and was considering just skipping making others with this pattern. I think I see where my error was and will give it a go another time.

Reba'squilts 08-14-2014 04:09 AM

Good luck with your quilt, it will be beautiful. I just love how QuiltnNan can draw up a quilt on the EQ. And give yardage!! I made a quilt similar to this for my grand niece a few years ago when I was a real beginner! I did not know it had a name. Will make it again for my grandson now that I have seen such a nice picture!

JanieH 08-14-2014 07:38 AM

Thank you QuiltnNan and Willferg for your help with yardage. I always get confused also!

Jingle 08-14-2014 08:04 AM

I want to make this quilt but always seem to pick a different one to make. Since I mainly have large pieces of fabrics, I just start cutting. Doubt I could ever truly decide how much fabrics I would need.

love EQ it really helps

I make the strips first and then cut the blocks to match that size. I also prefer larger blocks to make it quicker and a bigger quilt. Have made 3 in the past few months and love everyone.
