Help with quilt
Hi everyone,
I am asking for ideas on a quilt for my sis. My brother inlaw won't be with us for long. I want to make her something special. So when she is sitting alone at night she will have something to remember him by. I don't want to ask her for any of his close or anything. He was Chef of the fire department and he is a veitnam vet. She has many nick nacks both of that nature. Does anyone know where to get material of that nature. I am not thinking right. See my sis hurts and i hurt. Also what kind of pattern. Just a quilt to cover fom waiste to feet. Any help would be so great. Thanks so much |
Sad story. You might wait until he has passed and then ask for shirts/ clothing of his and tell your sis what you want them for. Or maybe you can make a picture quilt with pics that you have.

Personally, I find using fleece for the backing makes a lap throw very warm and comforting. Seems like you could find some firefighter fabric and do something simple (blocks with sashing and squares) on the front.
I'm sorry for your sister and I'm sure she'll appreciate anything you do... |
What branch of service was he in, you could get fabric for that (Army, Navy)...then of course Firefighter fabric,,,,and perhaps some "food - chef fabric".... make a lap size 40 x 50 ish....Perhaps give it to him to use and then when he is gone she will have something he 'used'.....just a thought....

you don't really have to get fabrics that show his likes or jobs. you could make a simple cuddly quilt maybe in blues and browns. mens' favorite colors! anything you make will make her happy if made with love. good luck.

Where did they go on vacations? Did they camp? Did they go to cities? maybe a quilt that will remind her of the happy times they shared together - not something that shouts "My beloved husband is dead!" Why not take photos and make a quilt with those? If they traveled a lot, either on vacation or moving when he was in the service, you could make a quilt with a road and put memorable places along the road of cities they lived in together or places they went together. She could trace the road and remember all the things that made them laugh and cry along their life's journey together. Their life together had to be more than his two jobs. That was probably what he did so they could have a life together.

So sorry for your pain. May you and your sister both find comfort with the quilt. beth

I like Tanya's Idea. Remind her of the fun and good things in a quilt. She will have enough around her for sad times. Make something to lift her up.

Prayers and hugs for you and your sister.
