Help with quilt

2 Attachment(s)
My mother in law bought these pieces of quilt at a flea market and we need help to identify the quilt or how it goes together. We think the round piece and the hump pieces make a flower but unsure = all help is very appreciated

Jingle 02-01-2016 05:45 AM

Welcome to the board.
Looks like it would be a flower to me.

dogsgod 02-01-2016 05:49 AM

I think the double hump pieces go around the circle and the spikey pieces go around the double humps. (flower petals and leaves)

Tartan 02-01-2016 06:07 AM

Maybe a variation of the Whig Rose pattern?

cjsews 02-01-2016 06:46 AM

Maybe the rounded pieces go on 1 sides and the spikes go between them. Count your pieces and see if the are even counts

cjsews 02-01-2016 06:48 AM

Sorry. Looking at the bottom edge of the spikes it looks like they should fit between and above the curved pieces as leaves.

Looks like it's an applique. Is there anything ironed on to the back of the fabric? The pieces would be ironed on to a piece of backing fabric. It looks like the pointy part fits into the indent in the other piece. The problem is these 2 fabrics are the same so this wouldn't show up at all. I'm wondering if there was a third fabric planned and the quilter didn't get it cut. The same 2 odd shapes would be cut from fabric #3, and then mixed in the block, so all rounded petals would be the same fabric, and the pointy ones would be the other.

Are there several of each piece that you can play around with. I have been known to cut quilt pieces from construction paper and play with them to get a look I like. Maybe you could try that with these pieces!

Sheepshed 02-01-2016 09:54 AM

Are there just two pairs and the pink center or losts and lots of pieces .... One thought is that they are mirror image and if folded in the center and stitched and turned right side out, woujld form 3-D flower pieces. Other than that idea, no ideas at all LOL

You gals amaze me. I can't wait to see what all of your heads come up with. I will insert my guess -- and it is truly a guess. How about the heart-shaped piece against the circle (the flower). Then one of the curved sides on the pointy piece against the circle and the other curve agains the side of the heart-shape? Like a flower bud and a leaf. Could have two leaves- one on either side of the bud. Just a thought.

I made that quilt from a precut package years ago. I will find it and get back to you. When I find it I can scan a block. Its among my UFO's that never got sandwiched. May take some time but I know I have it! I'm in the middle of rearranging my studio, but I know I have it, just have to find where I put it!

I think you have the petal that goes on the circle with the leaves on top of the petal. Cut enough to go around the circle for a full flower.

welcome to the board, good luck with your floral pieces.

Just to add my bit - you need more petals, and the leaves would fit between as well as on top of the petals.
( and I had to play with the drawing )

She appears to have just the templates. There are four flower petals as you have shown, but they are topped by a second set of smaller petals. Each of four leaves fits directly under the heart petals, almost like your bottom petal. Your center circle should be a tad smaller to allow more room for the double petals. The antique block is named Rose Of Sharon and Ohio Rose of Sharon. According to works by Nancy Cabot it was originally designed by a lady in Ohio. I had previously posted a picture of an actual antique block but someone deleted the post saying it violated copyright laws, but I have no idea how it could have. I am still looking for my quilt top I made and surely it should be ok to scan that and post it!

Just Jan 02-01-2016 06:29 PM

Its also called Lancaster Rose. I think that is the correct name and the Rose of Sharon is the same but seems to have buds at the corners that the Lancaster Rose does not. I am waiting for permission to post a picture of it for you.
I forgot to say in the previous post that the center circle is also two circles, one atop the other like the petals.

I think this block is similar to a block called Radical Rose. Drew it and colored it in EQ7. Hope this helps.

Bobbielinks 02-02-2016 09:16 AM

Love these puzzles!!!!!

Very similar, but a little different. The flower petals are double, one smaller one on top of the larger one, and they are more heart shaped. The leaves are a little different too, more rounded, but the layout is correct. It also has two center circles stacked. I'm still trying to get permission to post a picture of it. If you google ebay and search "Lancaster Rose quilt pattern," you will find several for sale there. The block has 14 pieces. Since I can't get my hands on my quilt I will go make one new block to post.

Here is the Lancaster Rose flower I just made. Its fused and assembled, ready to be appliqued to a background square. I like using a buttonhole stitch and fusible, but it can also be done as needle turn applique. I just put white paper under it on my scanner, because I haven't decided on a background fabric yet.
(No idea why its posting so large, at first it would not post at all. I rebooted then it posted but made it larger. Time for a new PC maybe!)

The people on this board are amazing. It reminds me of that old game show, "I can solve that tune in three notes."

Here it is "I can solve that quilt puzzle in 3 pages." "I can have that answer in two pages!" Congratulations to all you quilt puzzle solvers! I love it!

Here is an Amish version that looks to match what you show:

Hope this helps.

Well you wouldn't believe what you started with this post! LOL I made one block to show you the layout and I found fabric between tan and ivory for vintage looking background squares. I liked it so much I made 4 more blocks like the Lancaster Rose, then designed a Dresden Plate flower block, for four other blocks, to make a 9 block quilt. Still working on the blocks but will post pix when I get them done.
