Help with quilted window toppers
I am looking for some ideas from all the talanted people on this board. I just finished doing a major cleaning of my sewing room and it now has a new paint job. I have two small windows that are both in the same corner of the north and east side of the wall. Because I don't have a lot of natural light I want to put toppers on them and just use the blinds for cover. I just got the brain storm to use a quilt theme. However I don't know how to approch it. I want them to be quilted just like a quilt.
I just know I will get some great ideas here. Thanks in advance. |
Interesting idea but would you use any batting??? Maybe just come up with a design, maybe setting the blocks on point to have points. I would quilt them without any batting unless you want to do one of those bolster valance toppers. GOOD LUCK !!

That's a neat idea! What if you used a table runner or even a baby quilt size? Would either of those work for you? You could sew loops on the back and hang it on a dowel or curtain rod.

I made a topper idea to put around the edge of a shelf in my sewing room. I did some 4" square machine embroideries. I then used my 2" scrappy squares to surround them. I did 2 rows above and below the embroideries and I placed them evenly around the centre 2 rows. It looks very pretty.I used pellon instead of a thicker batting and it sits nicely. I normally have to be colour co-ordinated, but I decided In my sewing room I'm going to be much more flexible. I've also made a machine cover in pinks and greens and an overlocker cover in blues and yellows. I really like all my colourfulness. (If there is such a word)

I saw a sewing room topper that was made from strips of fabric and wooden spools. They tied varying short lengths of torn fabric on a rod and put the ends through the hole in the spool and tied a knot. They looked neat for a sewing room. Do you have enough orphan blocks to do a simple valance for the toppers?

I have made lots of simple curtains, etc. Here's my idea: You have to choose between a topper that is quilted and just hangs straight across the window, with no gathers (I'm thinking not too much piecing) or do a pieced short curtain that is about 1 and 1/2 times the width of the window, which has a channel in it for a rod and hangs in light gathers.
If you want more of a sewing theme, there are lots of fabrics that have sewing notions, buttons, sewing machines, etc., on them. But the topic of the fabric might be lost, depending on how high the windows are at the top. If this isn't understandable, let me know, I can try again! |

I think quilted toppers on the windows would look great. Please post pictures of your window toppers after you have completed them.

I am thinking of doing the same thing in a spare bedroom. My idea is to make a straight valance (no gathering on the rod) measuring the window and finding a block to use evenly will be the biggest hurdle. I am going to use flannel as my batting. I have 2 more weeks left of work then Christmas so mine wont get done until Jamuary at least !!
