Help - Quilty Christmas Tree Ornaments
Our guild does a tree every year at the local museum. The theme this year is Toy Land. So if anyone has any ideas, pictures, or links to a quilty ornament, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.

You could make ornaments of any block with a toy on it - in a fairly small size - 3-4". Examples would be an airplane, a car (either applique or pieced). You could even do just shapes of toys, stuffed and quilted.
|
Betcha Pinterest has some ideas.
|
You could do some fabric alphabet blocks or those soft toy grab balls. I don't know what they are called but they are made up of little football shaped sections sewn together to form a ball. How about small teddy bears?
|
Little teddy bear ornaments would be cute & fit in.

One year I made small teddy bears (maybe 6'' sitting) from muslin and tied red and green fabric around their neck. Really looked cute on my tree. You could make small dolls, use moss for their hair, use picture wire to make a halo and gather coffee filters for wings. What about a soft sided block for an ornament. Made from fussy cut Christmas fabrics would be cute.

Great tutorial for the Amish Puzzle Balls, thanks!

Last year, I made a few of these snowflakes using two different Christmas fabrics and fusible interfacing (like you would use for applique) The ones I made ended up being only 6 inches high. Some I hand stitched together, and some I used Elmers glue. I think the hand stitched ones were better, even if they were more finicky. They certainly made an impression!

I made sunbonnet sue ornaments one year. They were really cute!

You could make a sock monkey using fabric....
Or if you want to use socks check this out http://www.craftpassion.com/2012/04/...-monkey.html/2 How cute are those? |
I've see really cute stick horse ornaments (could Google I'm sure) made of fabric or felt with either some sort of dowel rod or even a candy cane. Another ice is to find an old cutter quilt and cut it into shapes---hearts, angels, teddy bears, scotty dogs, etc.--then did the shapes in a white glue, let dry, and then glue on lace, rickrack or whatever to trim. If you don't find the quilt, you could make little quilted blocks and do the same. Actually, little fabric or quilted scotty dogs make great ornaments...Pinterest and google are both good sources for patterns and idea!

What about the patchwork teddy, elephant and cat. A building block small quilt with tumbling blocks.

When our kids were very young, I made them a homemade ornament of a tooth pillow each year. I let them choose the Disney character they liked the most, painted that picture on the little piece of material, stuffed the little pillow, on the other side, made a small pocket for the teeth they lost that year. Each tiny tree pillow was dated too. They are grown, with families and kids of their own, and still remember these tiny tooth pillows we still hang on the Christmas tree each year.

I've seen pincushion patterns for elephants and such that would be cute.
|
...buy smallish styrofoam balls, cut pieces of fab..not necessarily in squares, triangles, etc., and just push these into styro with screw driver...like crazy quilt balls.......quick, easy, add fancy trims if you have, beads, whatever...
|
Not toy related but I made pierogis and raviolis with felt, pinking shears and a little hand stitching

One of my guilds does a tree for hospice each year & last year we made a couple of different owls out of felt for ornaments with scarves of all different colors. It was really cute with a tree skirt that went with it.

Love all the ideas here and the links. Here is my idea. Make a very tiny doll quilt..say no bigger than 4-5 inches. Then draw a small doll shape out of muslin, (cut larger than needed so room to stitch around) turn right side out, make a tiny basic dress, draw face on with marker (fine line) and then draw shoes on with thicker marker. Sew little doll to top of quilt. Hope you all can imagine this..I can see it in my mind's eye. With a hanger on one corner, would be a cute ornament. Dang..I might have to go try and make one. :-)

Hpw about small pincushios using little toys fabrics? Then you would have give-aways.
|
The old Debbie mum books had some darling toy images that would work great for this project.

remember those yarn dolls with a styrofoam balls for a head, how about emb floss and a small bead for the head, they also used to make octopuses out of them. go to bing or pintrest and there's a lot of things there. I'd probably do a few of those.Little teddy bears are cute too. I've made them as pincushions too. anything small stuffed is cute. just reduce whatever to 4-5 inches. have fun. show us some pictures of what you came up with.

I know I've seen patterns for paper pieced cars and trains. Some really cute ideas are popping up here!
