Someone gave me a really old Dresden Plate quilt top. However it is falling apart by the seams. To me it looks like the materail may be dry rotted because the seams will not hold together. Is there any way of saving it.

If the fabric is rotting, you won't be able to keep up with the repairs. If they are just splitting from too-narrow seams, you can reinforce the back with fabric or interfacing, and sew them back together.
You might find that only parts of it can be salvaged for wall hangings and other light duty. |
It may just be the thread that is gone bad, in which case you'd be OK with doing repairs, but if the fabric is a goner too, then sad to say you'll just have to give it up.

Might be possible to take it apart and fuse each square with some heavy
duty fusible, then put it back together for a wall hanging. Memories are worth working for. At age 76, I don't have any older folks to share memories with, just what they have left behind. |
