Help! on removing pencil markings
I need some advice on removing pencil markings. Yesterday I was marking a quilt for a group project with the ladies I sew with. Another woman offered to help mark and I was grateful for another set of hands! When she removed the stencil, I was speechless. She had marked so heavily (with pencil) that I knew right away that I had a problem. I didn't say anything, but called it a day and took the quilt home under the guise of working on it a little more. Actually I wanted to try to remove the markings. I put the quilt in a handwash and all the markings came out except for the dark ones. They are lighter, but still clearly visible. I don't know what to do next ... HELP! Any advice will be so greatly appreciated!!

It's funny that you ask this question; I started a handquilting project (my first one) and I wanted to mark my pattern on the white fabric. I am petrified of using the so called removeable markers because I know that so many of them don't come out. This is not my quilt but an Aunt-in-law's that her mother did right before her death 2 years ago. I thought about using a pencil and so I googled these tips. In the end, I wound up going with a F&P chalk wheel though so I haven't tried any of them.

I feel your pain also. A few years ago I marked wall hangings that I was making for grand daughters and used the marking pen that was supposed to come out with a fine mist of water sprayed on it. The marking came out but then reappeared a short time later. The marks faded after about a dozen tries but never did come completely out. Won't use that again.

What about repeated applications of perioxide over several days? It is less damaging than bleach - and much slower. You could apply it with a fine art brush so that it was a controlled application.

Do you have any of the original fabric left? I would try all the tips on a scrap first and see what gives the best result before working any more on the quilt. I too know that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach, only mine was with a blue chalk quilt pencil. Good luck!

you may have to make a paste of Oxy Clean and rub it in, soak and hopefully they will come out.
