Help with ruler work on DSM

I would appreciate advice! I am using rulers on my domestic machine to quilt. My top thread skips a stitch...and then breaks with the next stitch. I have changed to new needles( size 90/14).used 40 weight superior cotton thread in needle and bobbin, threaded, rethreaded ad nauseum, slowed down, loosened the tension,.....no help. I can free motion with this set-up....but trying to do a feather just won't work. What to do? Thanks

try lowering your ruler foot a bit. you want it to be just barely skimming the surface, or just barely above so you can easily move your quilt sandwich. If it is too high off the fabric you will get skipped stitches.

I use 50 wt. thread , quilting needles 75/11 and like Rob said the foot just above the sandwich.

Do you have the quilt supported well. If it hangs it can cause stitch issues

I wonder if you're pressing down so hard on the ruler that the fabric is being pulled, the needle is being deflected by the fabric, and so the stitch can't form.
