I'm making nine block squares andI want to make different color sashing for each block. I cut my sashing strips 1 1/2in and sewed it around the block. The sashing looks too thick. I think I made my strips to big. I would show ya'll what I'm talking about but I haven't learned how to put pictures on yet. I saw a quilt with each block having different colors, but for the life of me I can't find one pic. and directions on size of strip. I appreciate any help I can get. thanks

When I use sashing, I sew the side strips on one row of blocks. Then I sew the row of sashing together with the corner blocks and create a row of "just" sashing. I sew the row of blocks to the row of sashing.

By sewing the sashing all the way around all of your blocks, you use double the sashing and really, you are framing each block.

You can make the sashing any size you want, as there are no quilt police! A rule of thumb I have read would be to make it 1/4 to 1/3 the size of your block. So if you have a 12 inch block, 3 or 4 inches. Having said that, I've seen quilts with 12 inch blocks and 1/2" sashing that I liked a lot!
How big are your blocks?

As far as width of sashing goes it can vary with the size of th blocks. For what I visualize from your description, I would do no wider than 1-1/2" finished (cut 2") for each strip. That way when you stitch the two strips together your combined width is 3" or less if you do it narrower.

I agree!

I went with 2 in. I haven't finished all the blocks yet, but I layed the ones out that are and I like it. Thanks for your help..... and appreciate the note about rule of thumb....
