Help! Sewing on Fabric Sheets
Got my labels printed nicely on Printed Treasures. I couldn't find a youtube video on sewing it onto the quilt. How do you sew on your's? TIA

I don't use the printable fabric.
My labels are done on the embroidery machine and then stitched right into the binding. Cut fabric so it's double the height of label adding a 1/2 inch seam allowance. I center the label so when the seam allowance is stitched it sits in the center back of label. The top of label has fabric folded and no seam to possibly show. Stitch down one side edge of label. Turn the label right side out and iron The label is finished on 3 sides. The side not stitched is placed along edge of quilt and hidden in the binding. I like using the above method for a couple of reasons. There is always an extra piece of fabric in case of future repairs. Secondly, the label becomes a part of the quilt and not easy to come off. One more, only two sides of label need to be hand stitch to attach label. Another method for labels. You can also cut another piece of fabric (muslin) the same size. Remember to add seam allowance. Stitch around on three sides. Leave the side you are stitching into the quilt binding "open" so you can turn label right side out. Turn right side out and iron. The label is finished on 3 sides and you attach to quilt in lower right side of quilt. Then add binding to quilt as normal. Go back and hand stitch the top and left side of label. Easy to hide stitches. Sorry this is so long. Hope that helps! |
I have sewn them on by hand, turning the edges under. I've found it hard to get a hand sewing needle through the Printed Treasures fabric though, so I'm not sure this is the best way, and that's one of the reasons I haven't made any labels in so long.

I make my labels on my Epic. I hand sew them in place. I think that I will sew the next one into the binding to give that method a trial, sounds like less hand sewing!

I make sure that my label has a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. I iron the 1/4"" under, spray the back of the label with 505 Basting Spray, stick it to the back of the quilt, and hand stitch.

I usually sew two sides into the corner when I put on the binding and hand sew the remaining two sides with a 1/4" seam. If the stitching will blend in with the quilting, I have been known to sew all four sides on the machine, after the quilt is complete, especially on kid quilts.
