My husband is an umpire and this year the pants are all polyester and they need to be cut off and hemmed. Can someone please walk me through this I am scared to cut them I am afraid of fraying and when i tried sewing them with the big hem the material moves alot. Thanks for all suggestions.

Does polyester fray? I would think if you are afraid of fraying, zig zag right above where you need to cut off and then just turn it up as needed and hem.

Do you have a serger? Serge the ends, turn them up, pin and sew, slowly....

If they are polyester knit they will not fray. Just cut them off with about a one inch hem. Stitch 1/4 inch from edge, turn up and hem. You can use your blind stitch on the machine or hand sew with small stitches. Check the book from your sewing machine on how to do the blindstitch.

Use a ballpoint needle if you have one....or at least a universal.

Are they woven or knit?

LOTS of pins! The polyester will not fray. If you're not comfortable doing the blind stitch hem - just use a longer stitch length and sew 'em down. Trust me, no one is going to notice the hem. Just be mindful of stretching the fabric too much - don't want them looking like 'floods'.
