Hi everyone,

Well I've decided to make ironing boards based on Sharon Schamer's instructions but would like to know what size or sizes I should make them?

I think ironing space, just like cutting space is a personal preferance.
It is really going to depend on what you want the board for (home by the sewing machine, taking it to meetings).
I personally love the idea of using a tv tray and covering it.

If you are wanting to replace your ironing board then it would have to be much larger!

My ideal size would be 30 X 44 ( or if I had room 48 X 48 so I could iron a whole yard flat...but I have short arms and would have to walk around the table LOL) I would make it as big as possible for the area you have to use it in. Making smaller ones to keep by your sewing table or for travel would be a awesome too.

Justwanna -- are you old enough to know what a typewriter stand is? Think TV tray only square with built in plug-ins on the side and a long cord. They were used to put electric typewriters on and then their super long cord could go wherever. My aunt found an old one and covered it as an ironing board to take to her quilt meetings. It works great.

If you want one of the portable press boards that Sharon talks about, I made one 18' x 24" 'which works pretty well. Size is optional. I made mine with a piece of 1/4" melamine which is a formica like coating on particle board. The quarter inch thickness keeps it light for taking to class or just moving around the sew room.

Lisa, although I am not "old enough" :) to know what a typewriter stand is I did learn to type on a cheap little typewriter many moons ago when I was about four or five years old!

That actually sounds like a great idea though. If you don't have addiquit power outlets, I know it kinda sounds (in my neck of the woods we would say) hoosierish, but you could take a tv table, and fix some "clamps" on the bottom to hold a rolled up extension cord(the PROPER cord to use with an iron of course!). for clamps you could use a piece of wide ribbon and sew two D rings on the end. then just use a staple gun to hold it on the bottom of the tray. make either two or four of these to hold your cord!
