help square issue

If I am cutting stripes and 3 stripes will make a square. Can I cut this at 2 inches instead of the 1 7/8?

Hi Kathryn.....welcome to the Board....we would need to know what size square you want this to finish out as please.

It all depends on the pattern. Can you post a link? Most probably, if you change the width of the strips, you are also going to have to adjust other measurements to compensate. May not be an easy thing.

It's just a square out of the 3 stripes. But it would be easier to cut a 2 inch instead of the 1 7/8 I'm just going to rotate them. But new to all this and wanted to be sure I could do it

Depending on the pattern you are making, hard to say. I understand what you are saying with the 7/8" measurement. Perhaps so as to not have to adjust the balance of your cutting; place a piece of painter's tape; bandaid; something on your ruler at the 7/8" mark to make it easier in the cutting process. I'm in the process of trying to get better at piecing/cutting. I think my piecing is pretty precise. I think my cutting is 'haphazard'...not always using the same point on the ruler when cutting. My plan is to use the tape method to become more precise. Maybe this will help you.

Since you are cutting squares, it sure can be done. Adjust your length to compensate for the upsizing. Cutting the width at 2 inches will give you a 4.5 finished square, so you should cut your length 5 inches, which when sewn together will be 4.5 inches. I did this in EQ7 and printed the block at the 4.5 finished size.

Forgot to add: If this is the only block you are using, there will be no problems. If you have other blocks then everything has to be upsized otherwise it will never match up.

Do all the stripes need to be the same width? Some rail fence blocks are done with a wider one in the center.

Charlotte

It's something that my daughter wants done. And right now. Lol. But she is such a math wizard that there has to be something with the 1 7/8 width. But I'm cutting them at 2.

If you are making a half square triangle, just round up the number to an even number and then trim after pressing. You want to keep things as simple as possible and you would be surprise how often that extra 1/8" comes in handy for accuracy!!

Ty everyone. I'm cutting them at 2 inches.
