help with sticky mess

I carelessly got Dritz blasting spray on my favorite acrylic ruler and now it is so sticky its awful. I tried using goo gone but it did nothing. Anyone have any advice . I don't want to ruin my ruler

Try lighter fluid.

cad_queen_2000 10-07-2016 06:42 PM

Try vegetable oil and lots of paper towels. It works well on those sticky price tags on cups and glasses that is hard to get off.

osewme 10-07-2016 07:31 PM

I would try WD-40. It works for me on lots of sticky labels that are hard to get off.

patski 10-07-2016 07:52 PM

I would use goo gone or WD 40

Peckish 10-07-2016 08:06 PM

According to the website, use Murphy's Oil Soap.

Tartan 10-07-2016 08:26 PM

Whatever you use, make sure it isn't going to also remove the markings on the ruler.

Bluelady 10-07-2016 08:27 PM

WD 40 works well. I suppose lighter fluid might work, but I dont even care to try it

quiltingcandy 10-07-2016 08:47 PM

I have used a bit of hydrogen peroxide. My niece is an RN and she said they use it in the hospital to get sticky residue off people and things. I get basting over spray on my cutting table sometimes and I uses GooGone or the peroxide - depending on which ever is closest or how much area I need to clean.

I would use Goo Gone. Work on a small area. Spray it on, rub it around in a circular motion with your finger. Let it set about 1 minute, then rub again & wipe with a paper towel. You may need to do this several times to get it all off. Once you get it all off wash your ruler in a mild soapy water to get the Goo Gone off.

I thought basting spray was water soluble? Doesn't it wash out of your quilt?

tessagin 10-08-2016 04:28 AM

This is what I thought. I would just try to wipe it off with a soapy rag. If you have duplicate rulers spray the same spray on one of them then just try to wipe it with a damp cloth then a soapy one, gently.

Likewise .... while I am not familiar with the Dritz brand, for other basting sprays, all it is ever taken was good ol' soap and water!

Onebyone 10-08-2016 06:26 AM

If it won't wash off use the product made to remove all sticky, stuck residue. It's called Un Do. It's what pros use to remove photos stuck to frame glass without harming the photos. It use to be impossible to buy or even know about unless you were in the business but now easy to find at Walmart. :)

annievee 10-08-2016 06:34 AM

Caution in using WD-40----might take off markings. Go slow in anything you use, just to be sure it does not remove markings.

brandeesmom 10-08-2016 08:52 AM

Baby oil also works very well for sticky glues stickers and pine pitch.

Pennyhal 10-08-2016 10:01 AM

I don't understand whether or not basting spray gets washed out of the quilt. If it is this hard to get it off a ruler, it seems to me that it must stay in the quilt.

Some of them, like 505, are water soluble. Dritz is not water soluble. Dritz recommends cleaning with a "petroleum solvent". Paint thinner or mineral spirits would be 2 examples of that. Actually, though, the first thing I'd probably try would be liquid laundry detergent (or a paste made with powder detergent if that's what you have) as it's not as harsh & is also designed to break down oils.

Deb watkins 10-08-2016 02:32 PM

Dawn dish soap and a non scratchy scour pad worked for me when I sprayed my ruler.

Prekteacher 10-08-2016 03:58 PM

I used alcohol on my acrylic table insert. It's clean now!

ragamuffin 10-08-2016 06:24 PM

Goof Off is the one to use. It will take off that sticky stuff on medicine bottles. Good luck!

Lowes employees told my son they tried every thing in the store to remove sticker and tape glue. This is the best they found. Spray it on and leave it for a few minutes. Then whip it off, but you have to “let it work its thing”. I used it on a FW table to remove a long time sticker after removing the top of the sticker. I also removed gum from the leg of my pants with it, took it all off. You better like the orange smell, use sparely.

Hi Phyllis nm, what is the name of the product? I'd love to find some.

sjwnana 10-09-2016 04:58 AM

try rubbing it over with...PEANUT BUTTER... let set and wipe it off and wash with warm soapy water... works like a charm...

You probably wrote this in answer to another post, but we don't know the name of the product. I don't know of anything that has an "orange" smell.

nativetexan 10-09-2016 05:41 AM

I used alcohol wipes to get sticky off the glass and wood of our new t.v. console.

fruitloop 10-09-2016 06:02 AM

As posted by Onebyone. UnDo is the only product that will take any sticker off anything. You can wet a photo in it and it will not harm it. I use it for everything sticky or stuck. It dries fast. I'm amazed that so many have no idea about this product.

Murphy's is the best and easiest way to clean up sticky residue, love this stuff for all kinds of household cleaning. Wish I could find it in a 1/2 gal. jug.

momsobon 10-09-2016 07:04 AM

Hand Santizer will do the trick.....

margecam52 10-09-2016 07:13 AM

Any oily product, even peanut butter will work, you will have to rub it some. I use regular sewing oil at our shop, but at home, usually cooking oil. Tiny bit goes a long way...Rub it into the basting spray and let it sit there for about 10 minutes...now, add a drop or two of dawn dish soap...rub that into the oily mess...should wash the spray off...you may have to repeat. Goo gone is pretty harsh, and when I tried it on a Dritz ruler...faded the lines on one end. My favorite ruler...now I have to replace it..phoey.

Remember oily products will leave a stain or will be hard to remove the oily film. Another step in the clean up.

maryfrang 10-09-2016 09:13 AM

Fabric softener or a fabric softener sheet. I have used it to get a stablizer off my iron, a place I did not want it on fabric, and my ironing board. It is worth a try.

GiGi Sure Clean from a beauty supply store is what I use to clean my machine embroidery hoops after a spray buildup.

meanmom 10-09-2016 12:26 PM

I use alcohol wipes. There is a box of them in my sewing room. I have no idea how they ended up in there. They are also useful to clean the sewing machine needle if it gets gummed up. Sometimes the basting spray seems to gum it up. Also if I am sewing a lot of fused designs it gets gummy.

My husband buys it- it's called Fast Orange Hand Cleaner. It has pumice in it and smells nice-like oranges. He gets it at lowes but I think he also has bought it at one of the box stores. It's about $7.00

garysgal 10-09-2016 01:17 PM

Forgot to add it's by Permantex and comes in an orange jug with a pumper on the top.

Rubbing alcohol?

I use rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover

Jeanette Frantz 10-09-2016 10:46 PM

Nail polish remover may cloud your acrylic ruler. Most nail polishes have some acrylic in them, so be very careful!
