I'm ready to start on the my real Cathedral Windows, but I'm not sure how to stitch... isnthere a name of what I need to do so I can look it up?? I feel so lame
Lol |
Are you doing the CW's by hand or machine?
Have you already cut your fabric? I don't know which stitching part you're up to in the construction process. Here's an in depth tutorial (if you don't have a start point yet): http://ajpadilla.com/tutorials/cathedral-windows Also, check out youtube. There are a few videos there that take you through the steps. |
I am doing it by cutting the squares and ironing them down to size, then attaching them by machine. At that point, I'll add the windows and stitch by hand, and that's where I'm uncertain. It must muse be a simple running stitch right? Off to check your link now, thank you!

Oh that was a great tutorial, but it calls for an invisible stitch. How do I do that on the window??
|
Kim, I just use the same stitch as you would use to applique. Its just a short stitch under the main fabric then up into the edge (fold) catching just a few threads and back down directly below it again into the main fabric.

use the same stitch used to stitch on your bindings- that one is an invisible stitch.
small stitches- close to the folded edge- there are lots of tutorials on hand stitching binding- same technique |
i just do a small running stitch prob about 1/8 in from the edge and it doesnt have to go through all the layers either

Have you considered sewing the windows on by machine? It's really easy. Eddie put a tute up on the board here. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-35742-1.htm |
Thanks all, that helps!! I like the machine sewing, but I'm doing this so that I have a take along project to do. One day of idle hands at the water park last week drove me crazy! Lol
|
The stitch I use is demonstrated very well on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s574YcWRG2k let me know how you are making out with your project! |
OMG Dena that's totally do'able!! Thanks!!!! So that's okay to do for the windows then..... Just do it along the turned edge... I thought I was supposed to go all the way through!! lol!
|
Oh, I never worried about going all the way through. In fact, if you keep it loose, it makes the top "windows" float above the base so you can actually put a finger underneath it. Kinda cool.
By the way, I never sewed my bases together by machine. I joined them by hand too. I did try the machine join but found it was easier to be accurate putting two bases wrong sides together and whip stitching. The cathedral windows cover the join anyways! |
Yeah I was prepping all the squares and decided to do the whole thing by hand. It's meant to be a take along and if I do half of it by machine, I'll have nothing to take along! Lol

That-a girl!! If you need any help, let me know. I'd be happy to answer questions.
