I'm fairly new to quilting. I am trying to adjust the size of a Broken Sash block and I'm not doing a very good job! The original size is 12 X 12 finished. I want to make it 10 X 10 finished.
Can anyone tell me how to figure that out?
If I did the attachment right you should be able to see that I cut all my points off.

you can trim the triangle pieces from the bottom/long side and you won't lose your points.

Thanks, I'll try that. How do I figure out the measurements of the pieces? I'm having trouble doing that.

I'm not sure how to get this one block trimmed from 12x12 to 10x10 so that it looks right.

What I would do is sit down with paper and pencil and think and measure the different pieces out. After getting the measurements drawn do it again on a different piece of paper. Don't forget that on each piece you have to add 1/4 inch seam allowance all away around each piece. This process can be done if a couple of different methods depending on what works for you.

This is how I would do it. I would keep the 12x12 to use as an extra block sample just for the layout. You can always add the Broken Sash block to the back of your quilt as a surprise.

Keep asking questions here, you'll get many different replies.

Again, don't forget to add in the necessary seam allowances!!

How about going to a place like staples and have them reduce the pattern to your specs. maybe this is not a pattern but just a thought

Each quarter of your new block will finish 5". The rectangles will be 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 cut size, and the "geese" will be that same size before joining to the rectangles.
I like the suggestion of trimming slightly larger geese rectangles to the 2 1/2 x 5 1/2 size!

Your geese and your rectangles have to be 5 1/2 by 2 3/4 UNFINISHED. to get your 10 inch finished size.

The math: 5.5 plus 2.75 plus 2.75 (unfinished) equals 11 minus .5 minus .5 (2 seams 1/4 inch from each side of 2 seams) equals 10 inch unfinished block........ This is the math for 1/2 of the block.

Put it on graph paper and be sure to add that 1/4 when you are ready to cut the fabric. When I strted quilting many moons ago we used the plastic templates with the 1/4 added to it.

For the block to finish at 10 inches, each of the quadrants has to be 5.5 inches unfinished. I'm thinking the geese and other pieces need to be 5.5 by 3.25 unfinished, but not positive. Someone else please verify my math.

You could also print out the block pattern and reduce it to 10.5 inches and then paper piece it.

I have to ask, even though it does not help the block. I have EQ6. If I create a block and save, if I send it out as an e-mail, doesn't the receiving party need to have EQ too?

The blocks!

it is a basic 4 patch pattern.
Draw a 10 square on 4x4 graft paper.
Divide into 1/4th.
Then Divide each square long ways into half. You should have rectagles of 2/5" x5" Cut out two.
On one, Dived in half and draw your triangle.
This will give you the finished size of each Piece.
Then redraw each cut piece on graft paper and add the 1/4" seam all around each piece.
You will then have templates for each piece to produce a 10" finished block.
You can either use the pieces to mark and cut or measure and rotary cut.

Saints quilt is done! I was married to it for five days but I finished it and turned it in yesterday. Hoping for some big bids for missions!
