I would certainly let her select the pattern and fabric. I have done that for my friends, with good results. I gave them five choices of patterns, ones I didn't mind making, and then we went shopping together. Might work for you.

I would definitely have her select the pattern and the colors, then you can buy the fabric if you can't do it out of your stash. It may be she'd like a whole cloth best, but who knows? Picky covers a whole range of opinions and patchwork can mean anything that she sees was sewn together from small pieces of fabric. Maybe she'll like a monotone or monochromatic color scheme where the different pieces of fabric blend into each other and aren't so noticeable. Maybe a landscape quilt or a portrait quilt. Usually picky and easy are mutually exclusive in my experience.

My teen granddaughter loves this pattern. I made six of the four patch for large quilt. It's a giant Drunkard's Path block.

That sounds like my DIL. I've been trying to find a pattern to make her a quilt. Would be very interested in what pattern you decided to do.

Has she shown interest in having you make her a bed quilt? Maybe that is not her style....how about starting with a tablerunner and placemats or a lap quilt before you plunge into a bed size....just a thought

Quickest thing I can think of would be to find some print she really likes, then using the fonts on your computer try to fashion some first initials in various batiks and applique them on.

I've done this a couple times, too. Find your print, then using various alphabets, cross stitch her name on the "quilt" top several times in different colors from your print.

It would be nice if you could sit down together and either look through quilting magazines or on line quilts to see what style she likes. Peolple who don't quilt or love fabric sometimes have trouble explaining what they like. Does she really want a quilt? Some people don't and it is sad when someone goes to so much trouble to try to make one for them. One of my daughters thought that she wouldn't care for any quilted items, placemats or bed quilts. After a time she said well just not any flowers. So I made her contemporary looking placemats, black and lime green with actual limes on the fabric. Very simple design which she saw in one of my quilting mags. Then this year for Christmas she gave me a quilting book and showed me a table runner that she likes but wants it enlarged to a twin size quilt for her little girl! So now I know that she prefers a modern quilt mainly with solids. So my advice is take your time and visit with your step daughter about it. Eventually, she will be able to tell you what she likes.
