Help!!!!!!!

I started quilting my daughter-in-law's quilt and did something I've always, always, always been careful not to do. I got the extra fabric that hangs off all sides folded under and quilted through it too. Is there a way I can get that fabric out from under the stitches without having to rip that section out since it's a large area? I know it's probably just wishful thinking that I won't have to rip out all of those stitches!!!

I'm afraid the only way is ripping-sorry!

I've done that too!! So sorry don't know of anything to do but sit in front of the TV and pick out the stitches.

I was afraid that I'd have no choice but to rip out stitches. I know what I'll be doing in the morning. :(

Peckish 06-12-2014 06:23 PM

I did that once with a scrap strip of fabric, and I slowly and carefully picked apart the weave of the fabric and pulled the threads out from under the stitching. However, that strip was only about half an inch wide. I'm afraid you probably wouldn't be able to do that with a large chunk of fabric.

We've all been there and after you rip this all out you probably won't do it again for a long time. I know I'm really paranoid about it now. Experience is the best teacher of all.

Been there, done that (more than once), but ripping it isn't nearly as bad as you think it will be.

If the fabric that you stitched to the back is all expendable, I'd cut it close to the stitches and pick it out as Peckish suggested.

Reminds me of the time I stitched the article of clothing I was hemming on my lap to the slacks I was wearing...

Homespun 06-13-2014 03:21 AM

When I do that, I cut off the folded under part as close to the stitching as I can get and then using a long pin or my seam ripper, I pull the weave apart. Good as new!

You can do this..... and while it's not the favorite thing in quilting..... we've all done it at some point.

KimS 06-13-2014 06:44 AM

Sheesh!! I bet I won't do that again for a long time!! (Notice I didn't say "never".) Have all 50" of stitches ripped and starting to knot and bury thread ends. Thanks for the suggestions and support. :)

That is what I would do. I am a DSM and it wasn't that large of a fold.

Time for frog stitching....ripit, ripit, ripit...Sorry!

quiltmom04 06-14-2014 04:48 AM

I've done that! And nope - ripping put the stitches is the easiest way out of that mess!

You have a lot of company in doing this, not that it makes the ripping out any easier. Every time you look at this quilt I'm sure you will remember this but also try to look past it and see the beauty you've created in the end.

, This is what I also do. Just be sure to check your stitches to make sure they are not too loose after ripping out the extra layer of fabric. Good luck it can be done this way just take your time. (but it may not be quicker than ripping out the entire area)

I'm sorry this happened, as I have done this also.
