This is EXACTLY the go-to place for a step by step, 24 hour help line tutorial on OBW ... or, Tip Toe through the Hexagons ... Cutie is a very good teacher ... lots of pictures, and she did it while she chatted with us, so you will also see the students' questions, fabrics, and her encouragement and answers. <wave> Thank you, yourstruly quilts for getting that link so quickly. Good job!

There is a very easy pattern called Stacked Posies that uses squares for a stack and whack look.

This link didn't explain what the angles were to get a complete circle/hexagon out of four pieces.
a hexagon is six triangles of 60 degrees each which will equal a 360 degree circle in the very center. Hence, to do a hexagon, you have to have six layers in order to have a complete hexagon/stack and whack style.
I am not understanding how, if you take four layers in a square, cut in quarters and then cut the quarters into half square triangles, you could ever get a complete block? with the latter formula, you would need eight layers of fabric to get a complete square again. :?

That is the Pattern I was thinking of when I mentioned the square stack and whack. I think - - in order to get a complete block, you have to have as many layers of fabric as the pieces it takes to make the whole block. Each stack of layers equals all the pieces needed in the shape - - for example, six layers of fabric if it takes six shapes to create the whole form (hexagon) ... four pieces to create a square ... eight pieces to create the square made of HST, if I understand the beginning of this thread ...
One has to admire the ones who have figured these things out for us ... <wave>
