I need some serious help with organizing my fabric. I must have 200+ yards of fabric. I need ideas on how I can fold it or whatever so that it gets organized. I do not mind having to buy something to make this possible but I have no clue and where to even begin.

Thanks so much in advance!

I bought clear rubbermaid containers that stacked on top of each other. I then sorted by color and labeled each one accordinging. It makes it much faster to find a piece I need using the clear containers.

you could cut cardboard and roll it onto it like they do in the fabric store,,??? or put it in clear bins with labels,,like pastels,, dark,, ????

I fold mine over a 6 or 8 inch ruler. If you don't feel like doing that, you can send it to me :-P

I will try folding it over the ruler. I so love my fabric. I just need to be able to get to it easier.

This fabric addiction is just a blast!

Here is a tute on organizing your fabric.

quilter1 05-31-2010 04:16 PM

I just finished a similar project, I had 38 bins of fabric in a variety of lengths. I sorted them according to size, then color. I put the FQ's into 2 bins, and sorted the longer lengths into color, then the large pieces. I ended up with 20 large bins packed with fabric, but it is now accessible and organized.

Thats what I do too. However I am limited to what I can fit under the table in my sewingroom/library. :)

Janet, you need to come to my house.

I fold mine in half length wise and wrap around my 6 x 24 ruler, remove the ruler and fold in half. Then stack it on shelves. Think I will try Janet's method, looks much better.

I fold mine over a 6" ruler like the others have stated and I l like to have mine on shelves so I can see all of it. I sort by color mostly, but do have some themes, chilrens, western, etc.

Here is how I have mine organized. Kwhite does the same thing. We both have it stacked on shelves, but you can put it in bins.

Thank you so much! Oh, by the way, my given name is Melissa Lynn. I haven't ever known anyone else with this name.

Take care!

Here's an idea. For all the fabrics, which you can't find room for, place in one or more boxes and send it to me. I'm sure, I'll be able to find room for it all. :D
