I have a question about sashing. I am a newbie and have never done sashing before. If my blocks are 9 1/4 inch and I want to do sashing with the little squares at each corner, how long do I cut my strips and what size for the little squares? I will be back a little later to check this post.. thanks all in advance for any help.

Cut your sashings the same length as your blocks and as wide as you want them although for a 9 1/4" block I wouldn't go wider than 2 1/2" but that's up to you. Your cornerstones should be a square of whatever width you choose. ie: sashing 9 1/4 x 2 1/2, cornerstones 2 1/2" square.
Hope this helps

I probably wouldn't even go that wide. However I might use a 4 patch as a corner stone and use 2 sashings if I wanted to make the quilt bigger.

cut the sashing 9 1/4 by the width that you want and the cornerstones the width that you cut the sashing by the same width. Hope you can understand that. Let me do an example.
Say you want the sashing to be 2" finished. You would cut the sashing 2 1/2 x 9 1/4 and the cornerstones would be 2 1/2 x 2 1/2.

It's a lot easier to do sashing without cornerstone if it's your very first try or if your blocks are a bit out of square. FIRST SQUARE UP THE BLOCKS! Cut sahing width as wanted, plus 1/2, and sew to each side of each block (except the ends). Cut these pieces all the same to square your blocks. Then sew blocks together as a row. Do all rows and measure carefully because you're going to cut the long strips of sashing all the same length (average length of the rows is how I do it) to keep everything square. You'll have to ease in the extra fabric to make them exactly even on the ends. The importance of squaring applies even if you use cornerstones

Thanks for all the help. I did square up my blocks already, so they are all exactly 9 1/4 x 9 1/4. My dear sweet hubby cut a piece of plex glass for me to make sure they are all squared. I also hit my luck at our local Goodwill store (saw what one poster said about her fabric find there) and I found the backing for my quilt I am making for 4.99. Well back to quilting, I can't wait to see how it looks with the sashing now.
