Help with very simple block
 

I have designed a quilt (using EQ8). The sashing includes a block that is basically an hourglass block, but three of the sides or triangles are the same color, and one is a different color. Is there an easier or better way to make the block other than the hourglass method? The only other way I can think of is to make a flying geese unit and add a rectangle to the top. Thanks!

My scanner was being difficult. I think I'd go the Goose/Rectangle method, but sometimes you know the diagonal measurement so the QST might be more appropriate.

I think the third option does have a name, I call it Half & Half.

Cheshirepat, that is the block exactly! Iceblossom, you are right, I didn't think of the third option you call half and half, Deb Tucker calls it a combo unit. I thought of another option -- mirror image pickets. Maybe this is the easiest. Always happens when you let something percolate in the back of your mind, you come up with ideas. Thanks for your help!

Oooo... I like the picket option, that would be wicked fast to cut and sew! I drew that on my sheet and am going to stick it back in my quilt notebook.

Imho , it all depends on where you want the seam and the bulk to be and in this instance how the seams will line up with the seams in the quilt. All four will give you the visual effect you are looking for. I have done several BOM quilts that have used a variety of methods. My issue with the picket fence idea is that if there are a lot of them and since I am a bit OCD, I would spend hours on pinning that intersection to get the point perfect - lol!! So, I tend to use the flying goose method when I am on my own because I am comfortable with it, it eliminates some bulk in the seam allowance.and I get a good point. The combo unit would work well too.

Take some scraps and make one of each. Find one the way that looks good and works for you.

Your goose piece could be made using a hst for one part and the 3rd part as the other half of the goose.
