I need some help on deciding what kind of block to do for these 3 fabrics. My BIL has made a chicken coop in his backyard and I'm doing this for a joke. I want the chicken fabric to be the focus material. I've seen the warm wishes block but want other ideas also.

Thank you in advance.

D9P using the focus fabric as the larger blocks would work! Also use the pattern that the Downy quilts are made from.

MISHNJIM 10-15-2010 03:20 PM

Just saw this one...Tam's Patch http://www.quilterscache.com/T/TamsPatchBlock.html What do you think?

ncsewer 10-15-2010 03:23 PM

How about square in a square, alternating the secondary fabrics when you place the blocks.

wolph33 10-15-2010 03:34 PM

yes sq in a sq alternating the outer fabrics

carolaug 10-15-2010 03:41 PM

I agree the disappearing 9 block.

virtualbernie 10-15-2010 03:55 PM

How about attic windows. The chickens can be the focus fabric you see "out of the windows"

Candace 10-15-2010 04:28 PM

Or a simple rail fence.

dsb38327 10-15-2010 04:35 PM

Does it have a repeat in it?
I don't know what I am talking about because I don't know how to do one yet but veterans: Would a stack and whack work with the chicken fabric and the solids for sashing and binding??????? Love those chickens...

CoriAmD 10-15-2010 04:40 PM

how about the "attic window" block.

ooops, I see someone already suggested the attic window. I think it's rather easy, you just need to do mitered corners in each block.... or you could just do a square window with no mitered corners

prairiequeen 10-15-2010 04:44 PM

I vote for the DNP. Gotta love it for everything.

e4 10-15-2010 04:44 PM

If it's just for a joke and you don't expect it to get used much, I would choose something really easy. If you really expect it to get used, I love the idea of the attic window.

thimblebug6000 10-15-2010 05:20 PM

That quilterscache block is the same as what you end up with in the DP9 isn't it?

mrspete 10-15-2010 06:33 PM

I saw a quilt at the show that had farm houses on it. this is a good theme for it.

dyer804 10-15-2010 06:53 PM

Another vote for Disappearing 9 Patch!

My vote, too.

quilting cat 10-16-2010 02:57 PM

Looking good! I'd add the setup fabric to the outside, too.

dyer804 10-16-2010 02:59 PM

very cute!

Going to add the sashing fabric as the inside border and then one of the other's as the outside border. The fabric store still had some more of the chicken fabric so that's what I'll probably use as the backing.

Thank you again everyone!!! Muah!!!

carolaug 10-16-2010 04:28 PM

I really like that....never saw that pattern before. I have been doing sashing on my quilt this evening too...its taking me a long time. I have never done sashing before. done for the night...getting too tired, I am hoping to finish the sashing tomorrow...I am trying to make sure I quilt a few hours every weekend. It harder to find time to quilt now that I am working again, but I will make the time.

I'm attaching a picture of a pattern that I have named "Chicken Coop." I'll send it to you if you want it.

After I posted my previous reply, I saw that you've already decided about your quilt. Good choice! He'll like that.

dasmith2 10-16-2010 04:37 PM

Oh that is just so cute!

Here it is...I'm happy with the way it turned out. I was wondering if I should add another border. The inside border is 2 1/2". It's already long enough for my BIL the way it is now. But does it look unfinished with only the one border?

I think the attic window would be good too! Oops, spoke too soon. Very cute!

MadQuilter 10-19-2010 03:03 PM

That would make a great attic window. Oh gee - I guess I should have finished reading the thread, lol. LOVE those chickens. It looks perfectly framed to me just as is.

bjnicholson 10-19-2010 03:08 PM

Do you have a dark brown? Or just use it for the binding??

dsb38327 10-19-2010 03:10 PM

It is perfect. It is awesome.

I think a dark brown too. The contrast would pull out your colors a little more.

This is so cute, if you want to make me a gag gift, please feel free!

AlienQuilter 10-21-2010 09:44 AM

Beautiful!

I also vote for a dark brown border/binding.
