I like your original idea - use more of that bright blue to tie in those background squares - more of the lighter yellow, and then throw in more colors - maybe lime, and maybe a few modern prints. I think that once your rings overlap the original squares, it might come together really nicely.

Ok, this has really intrigued me! I took about 5 minutes & cut it up in Paint. The squares are not all the same size in my cut up, and in real life I would have put a bit more thought into which sections I put together, but I think it sure would be interesting, but not a baby quilt!

My first thought was that I wouldn't add any colors -- there are already almost too many. I'd go with a 4-4.5" wide white sashing to add some unity. Then, for quilting, I'd either go with matching thread colors for each block, or a very light, light blue across the entire top -- could even use a blue variegated like Aurifil #3770

However, since you mentioned a Fall color scheme, the other option I'd consider would be to use that yellow-orange from the center block with the darker blue background for the sashing & then would quilt in black. Would definitely read as autumnal/Halloween-ish.

Apologies -- my Adobe Suite isn't working properly so I tried to re-color in Paint & it didn't work out so great. Just imagine in the 2nd one that everywhere you see light blue "stitching", it's black instead. :)

Your idea of adding more rings to loop the existing rings together may work. Each row could be a long bug... the end circle being the face, then fill in the bug body with more rings. Add legs and you may have an awesome bug or with no legs an inchworm. :) Alternate each row with the bug face going in different directions.

I really like the green color I see in the tiny leaf I see in the upper left corner of your photo if you need to add another color.
