I've been showing my dgd the fun of quilting. She is 12 years old and seems to enjoy what we've accomplished so far. She has pieced an approx. 36 x 36 lap quilt. (small lap) I think I would like to show her how to tie this first one. So that she has a finished product sooner. But now I have a question-do we tie before we put the binding on? Or after the binding. And is there a need to baste the layers prior to tying? Thanks for any help you can give this helper. ha

I would spray baste, tie and then put on the binding.
Good luck and have fun!!! :-D |
When I tie quilts I sandwich then put the quilt on as big a flat surface as I can and just tie from one side to the next - don't baste at all - even no pins. With hers being only 36 x 36 it should be ok to do that.

Sandy: first, thanks for passing on the love of quilting to another generation. I think that's fantastic!!
I've only tied one quilt and I do the binding last. Good luck to you both and maybe have her post a picture here for us to see. |
Isn't it wonderful to share our quilting with someone we love. Please post pics.

Awww it sounds like you and DGD are having a wonderful time quilting together :D:D:D I would bind it last, too.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the info. I just want to keep her motivated and give her a finished product-quickly. Now she wants to do a wall hanging for her room-orange, pink, lime green! Thanks again, and I will post the picture when we get it completed.

I tie lots of quilts, I put the binding on last.

I would spray baste or maybe stick in a few safety pins. By all means, have her tie the quilt! Then do the binding last. She will be so thrilled to have completed her quilt.
