How much would you charge someone for hemming pants?

Eva Knight 01-11-2011 06:17 PM

i may be a little cheap but 7.50 is what I charge.

Farm Quilter 01-11-2011 06:18 PM

$10.00...takes away from quilting time!

donnajean 01-11-2011 06:18 PM

Depends on type of hemming - machine or hand. I would go by time spent.

Grammy o'5 01-11-2011 06:18 PM

The dry cleaner around the corner that does alterations charges $10/pair.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-11-2011 06:19 PM

Ugh- I hate hemming! Only do it for my hubby and kids and only when they are desperate lol

Karen K. 01-11-2011 06:28 PM

I am a professional seamstress and charge $10 pair for turned under hem, more for lined pants and more for cuffs. So many are still used to mom or gramndma doing it for nothing.

You are right, it does take away from my quilting time. I really don't like to hem pants either but someone that I work with ask me if I would hem her grandaughters 4 pairs of pants that she got for Christmas.

UglyCook 01-11-2011 06:32 PM

They'd have to prepay me $150.00 to even think about it!

kwhite 01-11-2011 06:32 PM

I always charged my hubby kisses for hems and buttons! :)

ncsewer 01-11-2011 06:50 PM

A friend just told me she paid $10 and said she would rather pay me if I wanted the job. I hate to hem, but have to think about it.

I wouldn't do it. It always starts with "Could you do me a favor and hem these?" Then you end up their personal seamstress for nothing. There are dry cleaners that have employees that spend their day doing hemming and alterations.

Gramma B 01-11-2011 07:07 PM

Wow, I must be doing them way to cheap; cuz I charge $5 per pair. Most standard alterations, I just charge $5.

lol!!! That's too funny you said that. I have a bag of pants for my daughter that she needed hemmed, they are still sitting in the bag next to my sewing machine, getting in my way. I ended up getting her new pants. I HATE hemming. Once in a while I will do it, but it has to be a necessity.

Ok this is time for tough love.

While at work a co worker came up to a fellow quilter and ask her how much she charged to hem a pr of pants and her reply was her machine doesn't do clothes. They responded do you need a special machine for clothes?, her reply ,at my house you do!

That is too funny. I think I might be using that next time someone asks me to do that. :)

wolph33 01-27-2011 12:16 PM

I hare hemming also.when people here I quilt then right away they need pants hemmed.rotflol-I don't do that

ckcowl 01-27-2011 12:53 PM

i charge people $20 an hour for any 'utility-sewing'...so, if it took me 15 minutes to hem pants i would charge $5...if it took 1/2 an hour then $10....

I do it a little cheaper than you for pants or jeans, but I do a lot of dresses for the girls at prom time. Now most of them are done, but get their younger sisters & they pay themselves not " Mom". I also do some uniforms for State Troopers, County , & Correction Officers from State prison up the road from us.
