I like the look of the hexagons better. I sewed mine from the outsite in, but I don't think it matters as long as you are careful of the bias edge. The OBW book did say to make sure that you leave the straight grain of the fabric on the oustide edge of the block. I just completed a small practice one and dithered about turning the triangles to get the prettiest hexagons. Some of them wound up with bias edges on the outside. After playing with the placement for a while, some of them stretched. In my next one, I'm going to follow the advice in the book (what a concept) and keep the straight edges on the outside. There's so much going on in OBWs that it's difficult to pick out a specific hexagon, so trying to make them pretty is sort of wasted.
