Hexagon Question

How is a hexagon measured? It is from point to point through the middle or do you measure one of the outside lines? I wanted to find a free template to print some out but the ones in my pattern measure across the middle of it and it says 1 inch,( 2.5 cm,) and when I put that in my search they come up with templates that are way larger than the one I need. I guess I am confused. Do you buy your hexagon papers or make them? If you do buy them I would appreciate knowing where you get them from. I am not sure I would even order the size I actually need at this point. Sandra

I had the same question when starting hexies. I learned that they are sized by the length of one edge

More than most people will ever want to know:

From looking at pictures of papers for English paper piecing, it appears to me that the measurement used is the length of one of the six sides.

I think they measure one side. This is a great site for things like this:

note: if you make your hexes too big to fit on a piece of typing paper, it just shows a blank page.

Measure one of the sides, I have purchased mine at Joann’s but have also made my own.

I purchased the Fiskars hexagon punch at J's in the scrapbooking section. I have made lots of papers out of cardstock.

I purchase most of mine from PaperPieces.com. They are measured along one edge.

The proper way is to measure on edge. However, don't trust that all sites will list the correct measurement. Some will list the cross measurement so when in doubt, ask.
