Hexagon Question
 

If a pattern calls for 1 inch hexagons (finished) how are they measured? Are the sides 1 inch? Other way they are measured?

traditionally, that means the side of the hexagon is at one inch. so that would be a safe guess.
however, I have seen some that reference the whole diameter of the hexagon.

I believe it is the sides that are 1". Again, I've seen various discussions and hope that somewhere in the pattern there is something that specifies. Here's just one of the older threads from this board that discusses the various ways one can measure:

There is a wonderful site linked below that has all sorts of grids, both standard and specialty (like quilters). I am not connected with it in any way other than I use it periodically. I have it as a bookmark.

Go down a couple of sections to the Patterns for hexes and find other useful quilting options like tumbling blocks. You can then pick what you want/the size you want/do you want a single or a tiled sheet.

Remember when using something like that for quilting you might want to add the seam allowance to the measurements
