hexagon quilts

I have started a large project I am making a king size quilt with 3-in hexagons. I am still in the cutting out stage and I will be cutting out 4,000 little hexagons. I will also be hand sewing the whole quilt. Plus I have a DD that wants a quilt like mine but bigger hexagons so her's will be 5-in ones. I have ordered her paper pieces now I have to order mine. I still have to figure out my lay out for my quilt not sure of flowers, diamonds, or stars. At this point I do know that black is my color going around to make my design pop out. As for my DD's quilt it will be just random children's fabrics that I already have around the house from making some of their clothes and name pillows.

I have started a hexagon quilt also. I am using 2 1/2" squares of fabric. However, I am making mine a scrappy one. There will be no duplicates of fabrics and the layout will be random. The hexies make up so quickly and it helps me pass the time!

I applaud anyone who takes on a project with all hand sewing. I think it will be a wonderful heirloom to leave for the family. I can almost see it in my mind.

There is a quick way to do hexagons if you don't mind a seam down the centre. Draw a hexagon on paper. Cut in half exactly. Add 1/4 seam allowance on all sides of the 2 sections. Cut out on fabric join the diagonals in a row then join rows. My mind has just gone when it came to joining diagonals so have a go. Sorry.

I'm working on a hexagon quilt now also. Using 1 inch hexagons. It will be queen size. Nearly done with the piecing. This is my 3rd. If you go to the quilt gallery and click on GFG quilts, you will get lots of inspriation for layouts. Some real beauties there. Good luck with your quilt.

I made a 3/4" hex gfg about 55 x 65, it's my kitties because it doesn't match anything in the house. came out pretty

I never thought I would ever make a hand pieced quilt. Then, I started playing with some EPP hexagons. I am using 1.5 inch hexies and over the last year it has come together quite nicely. Who knows when it will be finished, but I have enjoyed working on it. It will be a very generous full size/queen.

I also applaud, anyone, that does hex's. I had a lady friend give me aGRGarden quilt top. She cut the pieces out when she was 10-11 yrs old. Anyhow, I hand quilted everyone of those hex's(3,000-3,500). It wasn't any problem for me doing the hand quilting. But just thinking on sewing all those hex's together, and getting them sewed accurately.

THANKS for all your thoughts insights and kind words.

I am not into handpiecing, and my DD has asked for a hexagon quilt, so I have found a tutorial on YouTube showing how to machine piece hexagons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQG0V42O0fI
Or you can search on YouTupe: Machine Piecing Hexagons.

I have no desire to do a hexagon quilt, but I applaud all of you that are:thumbup:

Yesterday at a quilt show I adopted someones stash of hexies. Sorry to find out they are not very well sewn so I don't know if I need to restart or just put them away for someone else to deal with. Ugh!

DOTTYMO 09-22-2013 03:29 AM

Do you have a friend or a shop that will cut them using one of the many cutting machines on the market. Big shot, aqueduct, go baby. They can also cut more than one at a time.

I have 2 hexie projects going, one is a GR garden with 1 1/2" hexies. That one I will work on probably in my grave, I take a little box of them with me when I travel and knock off a few flowers. The other is a pattern called rose star, the center hexie I am using is about 3 1/2" and then you cut the hexies up to finish the star. I have about 5 completed so they go much faster then the small flowers. Plus I am using a moda glue stick to make the pieces before I hand sew. I saw that idea in Paducah. I decided to continue hand basting my fabric to my small hexies so before I croak I will have at least one totally hand quilted quilt!

There is a faster and easier way to make hexagons, there is a new book out called: Quick & Easy Hexie Quilts by Dr. Peggy G. Rhodes and Julia C Wood. AQS Publishing . This method starts with CIRCLES ! ! ! You might want to Google it and check it out. You might be surprized. You can also combine their method with your paper pieced one and make them work together.

I am doing a GFG quilt with 1" hexies. I reuse the paper inserts when they are surrounded by new hexies. I have 65 "flowers" done, all different, and am in the process of putting white around each one (that is 12 hexies times 65). I will put them together with green pathway. I will wait until all of them are done, then lay them out for the pattern. Not sure how big this one will be, may have to make more. I like the project because it is portable, because it is hand sewn. Machine sewn hexies would not be portable, so I make use of the time my DGD is in swim class, etc. By the way, I started this one in March, when I first learned how to do it. And I hated hand sewing!!!!

I love this method!! After reading the book, I quickly adopted this method and I am really pleased with how it is going!! So easy! Particularly using my accuquilt 3 in circle die to gut out circles!!

I have plastic templates and a stick to pop them out of the hexi when it is ironed before sewing to the others. Got them at a quilt shop years ago. Shop is closed now, bummer, because it was one of my favorites. They always had a very large selection of florals. I have bought half-yards of repro 20's and 30's fabrics to make the small hexis. I think the size I bought is 2 inches or maybe 1.5 inches I can't remember. Haven't started it yet though.

I have a scrappy hexagon quilt almost finished and now I notice the smell of cat urine on it. Anyway I can save this quilt?

BETTY62 09-22-2013 12:22 PM

I admire you quilters who make quilts by hand, however, I would never live long enough to finsh one ..... not even a baby quilt. LOL

I love hexagon anything! I've made numberous Quilts, center pieces, table runners. I cut my templates from those nasty inserts in magazines, the postcards they want you to mail in to order something. They are free and I don't feel guilty throwing them away.

I started one last year when I was in hospital! Never thought I'd ever do Hexagons but got hooked! It is growing ....slowly!!! All 30s repro fabrics!! It will be kingsize WHEN finished!!! One of my Quilty friends suggested keeping the centre hexagon all the same colour as it helps to unify a scrappy quilt!! I used the red, but could have chosen any colour with the same effect!!

Gonna finish putting my hexie quilt together this week. My suggestion would be to start the piecing and not worry about getting it all cut out first. I'm the kind that gets bored doing too much of the same thing, so I do some cutting then some piecing...then something else (just be sure to keep the fabric for this quilt together).
I have been working on this quilt for over 5 years and it is EPP, definitely scrappy. It will be larger than full size when done and I am using 1" hexies. Hopefully I will have a picture to show soon.
Good luck with yours and enjoy the process. It can be relaxing.
