Hexagons - adding borders
I am starting to learn how to make hexagons as a new hand sewing project.
I am working without a particular pattern right now. Would any of you share your experience or research with me if I want to add borders after I join my hexies? |
I cut the hexies to make a straight edge then add border.

I did a runner with hexes once. I added the border color fabric as the last row of hexes all the way around, then cut so my border looks like a hex scallop. Sorry I gave the runner away and don't have a picture.

I'm doing a scrappy hexie project now. I have actually used hexies for my borders and I'm going to stitch around the edge and cut the last ones in a straight row for my edge.

I have appliqued the top to strips of border fabric. I did some applique on the border pieces. I did one by stitching hexes right sides together all the way around, then turning and stitching on the back, much like a facing. I liked this method. Somewhere out there in cyber space are instructions, but I can't find it now. If you are on pintrest it comes up from time to time. Have fun with your hexes!!

Like humbird, I appliqued the top to border fabric, mitering the corners. Here's a link to my thread on it.
https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...y-t233230.html I just pulled out a larger hexie project to work on while watching college BB games. They are addictive and great as a portable on the go project. |
You quilters are the best. This will be very helpful. THANK YOU!

Sometimes I sew in half hexies to even out my border.
