Hexagons
I just saw a method of doing hexagons that uses a circle on Quilting arts TV. Apparently it is a method used by Appalachian ladies. Looks very cool has anyone tried it? It doesn't use papers or templates.

I only caught part of it. I think it was 1300 something. It demonstrated the Disappearing Nine patch, a raw edge appliqué chicken and the hexagons. The ladies used a canning lid for tracing the circles onto fabric.

I hope he isn't promoting this as his own idea, people were doing this in the 70's when I started quilting.
I expect the Appalachian quilter's predates that... |
Saw it again this morning. I swear it was just on a couple weeks ago. Think they said it was 1308. Love the way she sewed the rows together.

I saw this. I always watch create tv before leaving for work. She really made it look easy making them. Very nice results. I didn't catch who came up with the idea or even what the lady's name was this morning but it was good.

I don't see why you'd want to do this. Just cutting a hexagon is easier because they fit together when you cut them and there is less waste. Or you could just use squares. I recently bought a bag of 1930's fabric pieces and discovered that there were a whole bunch of hexies all cut out that exactly fit the precut papers sold by Blank Quilting and the punch I just bought at Michael's. Some things don't change!
