What a gorgeous memory of your Mum, Sak. Its beautiful. So sorry for your sadness, you must have been very close.

QuiltnMyra 11-10-2013 11:40 PM

I do mine like Kindle too Jane. It makes the work lighter and more manageable as it gets bigger. I'm careful not to remove papers until the hexies are surrounded.

Thanks, I am going to be looking on the net at some different ways of doing them. I like having something in between other things to sew on.

I haven't touched this one in a while, but it's always right next to me incase I get the urge to work on it. I guess I put it off because this one is mine and I like to work on stuff for others.

All my flowers are done and ready to be sewn together in a quilt. I print my own templates on card stock and cut them out.

Gramquilter2, I love your hexie quilt. I see similar border in a future quilt of mine!! Lots of great info on this thread!

Completely addicted to hexies

Hexies are my go-to portable project whenever I walk out the door and know I will be sitting and waiting for something. Even if I don't have a specific project in mind, I have a small sewing case ready with all the essentials to just pick up and go. My largest (king-size, first pic below) project used 1½" hexies and is reversible. The smallest used ¼" hexagons (second pic) and is a design by Jaynette Huff. I bought her book for this quilt alone. :) My preference is to EPP with freezer paper, and my favorite size hexie is ¾" and I have made tons of projects with this size. I especially like to make table runners with this method, like the scrappy one below, that uses tons of reds and greens (third pic, my own design).

QuiltnMyra 11-15-2013 02:33 PM

I love your work Ajpadilla, was about to say 'specially the table runner and then I had another look and could honestly not pick one over the other. They are all stunning. I have been looking, looking, looking at the Jaynette Huff book and will probably send for it soon.

gramquilter2 11-15-2013 02:44 PM

Ajpadilla, love all of you projects, I am currently working on the Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern from Jaynette Huff's book too. Hope mine turns out as beautiful as yours is.

Sew nice ajpadilla! I have a started an itsy project with 1/4" but put on the back burner for now. I did take my hexi bag along while waiting for jury selection. What a great conversation starter! Had 2 quilters introduce themselves and check out what I was doing and a couple of non quilters came to watch:).

ajpadilla 11-16-2013 08:12 AM

Isn't it interesting how non-quilters are attracted to watch? So much fun and a great way to start conversations.

I really did enjoy working with 1/4" hexies - but then, I just love any kind of miniature. The biggest "challenge" (not really) was pulling out the paper. Found the easiest way was to stick a straight pin through the center back to catch the paper and pull it out. Would love to see your mini project when finished!

I've just started playing with epp and have a beginners question. I'm making the 1 1/2 inch 6 point diamond shape with Moda Midwinter Red 2 1/2 inch charms. The fabric has pieces that are red, brown, beige and cream. I have about 40 individual pieces done and am starting to put them together into the star shape. Do you use coordinating thread with the different fabrics or just something neutral with everything?

kathyd 11-17-2013 06:26 AM

Susann, when I am sewing like pieces together (red to red), I match the thread. When I am sewing pieces of different colors (red to cream) I use whichever color is less noticeable this might change depending on how the print is cut and what color is dominant in that particular piece.

Thanks, kathyd! That makes perfect sense.

Another hexie addict here! Started this last year when I was in hospital having my bionic knee fitted!! It is growing slowly.....always was going to be a long term project!! Done in 1930s fabrics. A useful tip from a fellow quilter was to keep all the centres the same colour...mine are all red...but I could have used blue / green/yellow etc They are 1" hexies downloaded from www.texasfreckles.com. I use 2 1/2" squares of fabric. I just fold and tack the fabric without tacking through papers. Easy to remove papers and no need to remove tacking stitches either!!!!

Susann 11-17-2013 02:22 PM

Oh how pretty, CoventryUK!!!

I have my 'ready-to-go' bag....take it to
Doctors/Dentist/long journeys etc!! It certainly gets a lot of curious attention!!

Susann 11-17-2013 04:33 PM

I have jury duty this week and am putting together a bag to keep me busy. I'm use to being on my feet moving so the possibility of sitting for hours on end makes me nervous!

oksewglad 11-17-2013 04:39 PM

Good call Susann. You will feel like you have accomplished something and the others are all envious they have nothing to occupy their time.

Just counted and I need to cut 8 more "flowers" to complete the little quilt so back to the pastel scrap bin.

kindleaddict63 11-17-2013 08:03 PM

I noticed how quickly it all comes to together - especially when I'm in front of the television. It looks like a lot of effort but turned out not to be as much as I thought it would take.

CGail 12-18-2013 01:44 PM

Someone mentioned earlier that it is hard to remove the paper hexagon. I use a one-hole punch on all of my paper hexagons. When removing, I just use the tweezers against the hole punched in the paper and remove it very easily.

You start with a CIRCLE ! ! Yes, circles. The book has been out for less than a year and is a wonderful book. Very well written and hundreds of pictures showing how to make them without a PATTERN ! ! !

I have that book and have tried hexies that way...they certainly are easier to make...not sure about the bulk though.....am going to buy the large circle die for my GO after holidays and work with that.

beaglelady 12-19-2013 08:01 AM

I love making hexies - so relaxing. I make my own hexies and like CGail, I also punch a hole in the middle then remove them with a crochet hook. Easy! I have lots of flowers made but haven't decided exactly what my quilt design will be, but I hope it turns out nice.

Do you have holes in your template to mark the corners. Looking for a quick way to mark.

...right now having fun cutting the paper pattern and fabric at the same time with the GO die...have been "collecting" those mail back cards in mags and in mail for pattern paper. This will be next winters project..too nice outside....finally...garden and pool time!

SherriB 05-08-2014 09:14 AM

I love making the hexagons. It is so relaxing. I am working on GFG and just need to put a final border of hexagons on top. It will be my first hand pieced quilt and I hope to hand quilt it also.
