What is the eaiest wy to applique completed flowers for my gfg quilt to the background fabric? I have watched many tutorials and not have found any that shows how to do this. I am getting close to this step, going tomorrow to purchase mybackground fabric.

Are the appliques hexie flowers? If so, how were they made? Do you want to hand applique or machine applique?

I personally believe GFG is all hexies...the " background" or path is just hexies all the same color joining the flowers...and it is generally flower...either center with one row or two then the background/ path.....some throw in a row or alternating green leaves around the flower..usually diamond shape...oh,many other possibilities.....

I wish you could post a picture. Are you appliqueing on the border or on the actual hexagon flower created by the hexs??

I guess I am thrown by the word "applique". As Geri pointed out, the background path of a GFG is cut into hexies and then pieced to the flowers (and each other).

I was thinking you wanted to add appliqued flowers to the quilt top. Either appliqued hexies like this:

or appliqued flowers added to the border of a GFG like this:

In this video Eleanor Burns shows how to appliqué them onto background squares.

You can appliqué one hexagon flower to a larger background square. If you have used the paper piecing method, remove the papers and press well with the iron to make sure the flower is laying flat. Fold the background into quarters and gently press in the fold marks to help position the flower in the center. Fold you hexagon flower in quarters and then match up the fold marks to get it centered.
Pin the hexagon to the background square. Use an invisible hand appliqué stitch and stitch the flower to the background OR after pinning in place, use a machine buttonhole stitch to attach the flower to the background.

I would do it the way Tartan describes. I think I would press before removing the papers, and give them a squirt of starch then precede.

Iam doing the wall hanging on the cover of "Quilts from Grandmother's Flower Garden" btly Jaynette Huff. The background piece is all one. I am making the hexies 1.5" versus the pattern of 1/4" so as you can tell it is much larger and I don't know how I am going to handle such a large piece when trying to hand applique. I didn't pay any attention to the original size when I started, in fact I just realized it when I checked the yardage for my background. I even went online to see if it was a typo.

You are making a beautiful quilt. Maybe instead of a wall hanging it is now going to be a throw or bed size quilt. What ever you decide, it looks like it will be beautiful!

Yes, that is a lovely piece you are doing...sorry I did not know what you were doing when I wrote my first reply.....do the directions give you any help in how to appliqué the GFG to bkgrnd ? My first thought, just looking at the pic....fold bkgrnd piece vert & hor., crease...do same with the joined cluster of GFG, pin down matching those press lines and appliqué the edges...maybe I would baste thru that middle, just to give it some stability...depending on the overall size...I think I would at the end leave that bkgrnd fabric on...not trim away as one does in some hand appliqué work...I am just guessing now...not there to see/ feel it....quite a challenge you have created for yourself....

I did not even pay any attention to the directions when I started doing it, I just liked the design and jumped in. I only have a couple more hexies to put on the last set of the main hexagons and then will decide on my final layout. I had it laid out the way I think I want it but have handled it so many times trying to decide on my background I don't even know how I had it laid out. The good news is that I almost always take pictures of my layouts to make sure I have enough contrast. Amazing what a photo shows that the naked eye does not see.
