Hexie papers- Huge! Any ideas?

Hi everyone, I ordered some hexi papers from Paper Pieces after seeing some lovely quilts on the board.
I ordered 2.5 inches and they are huge!
I now realize that measurement is of the corners, not the diameter.

I don't know what to do with these things. I'm so mad at myself!!
Any ideas? They don't look like they will be very pretty :(

call the shop and return them for credit towards the size you want

I recently finished a hexie quilt and the sides measure 3.5". I didn't use papers though, just cut with my regular ruler and hand pieced. It was fun and the giant hexies are kind of cool :). It's twin sized.

Faintly, that's beautiful!! Maybe I should keep them. I love doing handwork at night.
Yours is so nice and all done by hand? WOW
Thanks

How many did you order? I really love the quilt Faintly Artistic made. What size did you really want. I have bought from Paper Pieces they are very reasonable and want to keep their customers coming back. You could at least send them an e-mail and ask if you don't want to call.

I emailed them and got an almost immediate reply. They said they'd be happy to exchange them. I ordered 200 pieces. I'm not sure what size I wanted to be honest, but way smaller.
Nice people to do business with, for sure.
Not sure what I'll do. I love Faintly Artistic's quilt !!

Faintly, that is a gorgeous quilt!

I am smiling as I look at it. :-)

I think you should keep the size you have. Since you've not done hexies before this would be a good size to begin with......remember, you can fussy cut some at that size and make some cool design features. Btw did you also order the acrylic template for that size papers...if not, when you do,order the one with the 3/8" seam allowance rather than 1/4".....easier to work with.imho.....and don't forget the glue stick rather than basting those papers!

Lovely quilt. I'm starting a new hexie project. You start with one in the middle as if for a Grandmother's Flower Garden flowerand keep adding rings around and around. I hope that makes sense. A friend of mine has started one and I love how it looks.

It's very easy to cut hexies with a regular ruler, especially the big ones. I cut 6" strips, then used the 60° line on my ruler to cut a diamond, then cut the points off using the 60° line. I experimented by drawing lines on paper of different width strips to see if I would like the finished size, might do another in the future with 4" strips...

SusieQOH 08-31-2017 02:11 PM

I think I'm going to send them back and get smaller ones. I agree that with the large size a ruler would be best.
The company couldn't be more accommodating.
Great to do business with.

Have you seen this quilt? They use 3", then cut within the hex for different shapes. Beautiful quilts. http://www.katjasquiltshoppe.com/the...uilt-along.htm She has a couple different quilt alongs. Go to top part of page and check them out.

Somewhere I found hexie quilts embroidered & embellished like crazy patches - so gorgeous. This size would be great for those. There is one or two on my list for 'one day'

I am 75 years old. When I started my hexies last year I made them 3". Probably not going to be around to hand sew a queen size before I leave this good old world. I only work on my hexies "on the road", so that will take a lot longer to finish. I still need 400 white.

humbird 09-01-2017 05:37 AM

I use 1 inch hexie papers. I print the paper hexies, and cut them myself. Good mindless work while listening to TY. I may try the larger hexies one day. Do like Faintly's beautiful quilt.

very pretty!!!!

For anyone with an accuquilt they now make a 1" per side hexie die. It cuts the fabric AND the papers 1/4" smaller. I died and went to heaven. My first hexie quilt. The papers are perfectly shaped and along with glue basting saved a lot of time. My alternate method would be to buy papers. Worth every penny.

redstilettos 09-01-2017 08:53 AM

Faintly that is awesome!

I agree. I have started Rhonda Pearce's Insanity Quilt which is 10,340 half inch hexies - would not have even considered it without the AccuQuilt die. I have used magazine inserts for the papers.

Faintly Artistic, love your Hexie quilt.

Magazine inserts-brilliant. I had some card stock paper. I bought the accuquilt, used, several years ago and hadn't gotten around to using it. WHAT was I waiting for. I'm a newbie and my hexy quilt is only 300 hexies. Still the thought of cutting them out and worse- hand basting, it just wasn't gonna happen.

itssewfun 09-02-2017 06:43 AM

If you go to www.incomptech.com you print your own on cover stock.

SusieQOH 09-02-2017 06:46 AM

I sent them back and ordered smaller ones.

Suzie Q - go for it with your 2.5s

Judy, I sent them back. The reason was b/c I really don't want such big blocks for hand sewing. I can make one with a ruler.
I did see the hexie die but I don't think I like them well enough to buy one. Maybe I'll change my mind down the road. So I ordered 1.5 inch and will work on them at night with my cats, husband and me watching TV
I do love hand work but those hexies I bought were way too big!
Oh well...... :)

KalamaQuilts 09-02-2017 12:40 PM

we want what we want :) I was mad for English paper piecing for several years. Total fun.

That link didn't work for me but I did try it with my iPad.

I recently rescued a hexie from a used furniture store, all hand done with large pieces. It's made of gabardines, light woolens and a few plaid and fussy cut dress pieces. It is dark, black 'pathways', greens, blues, reds, browns. The damaged sections show 1/2 to 5/8 seams. Your large papers are perfect for piecing heavier fabrics/larger seams. I think the rescue is a great, graphic quilt.

Fussy cutting the right fabric could make a huge difference and a beautiful quilt. Could also do as an I Spy.

I made my GFG quilt with 1 inch hexies punched out with a paper punch I got from JoAnn's. It was thread basted and hand stitched. I did it sitting in front of the TV. I finally have it sandwiched and basted, ready for hand quilting this winter. It is too warm for me to sit with a quilt on my lap in the summer. I used cardstock and could get 20 hexies per sheet. Most of them are still reusable so may make another but with random colors instead of "flowers".
