I was just given a new project and I'm not quite sure how to tackle it. My principal has asked me to sew a box full of hexigon pieces together, but I only machine quilt and I'm new to this as well. Anyone have any tips?

I guess I should have intoduced myself first... Hello from Florida.
I'm a beginner at this (only piecing for 2 years). |
hexagons are easier to stitch by hand, but not horrible to do my machine. here's a tutorial showing one way to do them on the machine.

Great looking avatar.

Wow!!! Thank you... I've been thinking of this in my sleep trying to figure it out.

and thanks for the compliment! This is only one of a very few quilts I kept for myself. Red is my favorite color and I also used some Mickey Mouse fabric (big Disney fan). Lately I've been making some purses.

Welcome from Indiana! I sewed mine by hand and enjoy doing that as I watch TV. But the above instructions are very good for doing them on the machine.
Love your purse :-D  Hope you share a picture with us when you are done with your hexagons. Will share a picture of my work in progress |
Hi Shopbelt and welcome from Lakeland! Love your purse and avatar pic (quilt).

i made a throw of hex's but did them individually. then hand stitched them together. i hate Y seams!!
i'm making hexagon coasters now. same way. i cut 4 inch fabric and batting, then 6 inch fabric for backing. lay on top of each other, fold the backing over one inch, and another inch on one edge. pin. then fold next edge, pin, etc. then stitch by machine with zig zag stitch or blanket stitch. or do them by hand. you quilt each one individually if necessary. I did that for the throw since those were 6 inch hexagons. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...rrent=a41c.jpg have fun!! |
Wow nativetexan, love your hex quilt and the material. Really nice!

thanks, my SIL grabbed it when it was done!

Hi and Welcome from Oklahoma.

Oh my gosh! This is beautiful! I have never pieced anthing by hand. And, I'm kind of short on time. She wants it by Mother's Day.
I would be happy to post a pic when I'm done, except remember that I didn't choose the fabrics - she gave me the hexagons already cut out. Aparently her Mom was going to make the quilt many years ago on their 1st aniversary and never did. So she asked me to put it together so she can give it to her Mom. Sweet thought don't you think? So now I'm trying to figure out how and what pattern she must have had in mind. After a little research, I figure it must have been Grandmother's Garden. |
Shopbelt, I love your quilt, I would love to see a larger picture of it, and I think your bag is fantastic.
Here is my hexigon quilt....... http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-32542-1.htm |
