I'm a "selvage saver" too! I want to make some throw pillows, but I've only used them to create note cards so far! They are so unique to send and everyone comments who receives one from me! I place them on lightweight, fusible interfacing, then cut and glue to the blank card front. I place under heavy books till the glue dries!

I too do an inch and a half too if it doesn't take away from what I'm working on; sometimes I need the entire width inside the selvages.

What a cute idea! Thanks

I always want to do this - but, it seems to be on the back burner.

Mine varies because I cut enough to include the full print of the fabric. My quilt will be a kind of identifiable record of the fabrics within it.

I like the notecard idea - think I'll try it. I have used selvages to make mug rugs, pillow covers, wallhangings (photo is of a wool appliqued bouquet in a selvage vase), and currently a sampler quilt of traditional blocks. Selvages make great bindings - you don't have to turn under one side.

I think I cut 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 total, can't get to sewing room to measure. I've made quilts, mug rugs & tote bags with them and like a approx 1/4 of the fabric to show, but I don't have an exact rule, sometimes it is only a sliver of fabric, depends on the fabric & my mood, LOL. I have so much fun with the selvages and lately manufacturers have been even more creative with them. Like someone else mentioned I no longer like the fuzzy ones or extra wide, when I first started I used everything but now more snobby, LOL. It is one of those addictive things, one you start you get fascinated and see all the possibilities.
But at least I have haven't gotten to the point of buying fabric just for the selvage, I still use the fabric in other projects first! I consider that proof of sanity, LOL |
