I HAVE MANY "OLD" QUILTS FROM MY DECEASED FIANCE AND MY DECEASED MOTHER. THEY ALL GO WAY BACK AND HAVE THERE OWN STORIES WHICH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY MIGHT BE. i SURE THE GRAQNDPARENTS COULD TELL US IF THEY WERE AROUND. ANYHOW, I AM TRYING TO SELL ALL OF THEM AS A BUNCH AND AM WONDERING HOW I COULD GET THEM APPRAISED???----THANKS----DAN

http://www.quiltappraisers.org/findAppraiser.html

Written appraisals used for insurance purposes cost more - I've seen $35-65 per quilt, but if you had a pile of quilts, and just wanted ballpark figures before you put them up for sale, then I'm sure you could work out an hourly or lower per quilt charge.

The appraiser would (should) also have recommendations for you on reputable auction houses and dealers. eBay is also an option, but it's ...fluid.

But I wouldn't mention you wanted to sell them until after the appraisal.

While I'm not making any statements, many appraisers are also collectors. Just saying. ;) ;) ;)

Good luck. If you ever take pictures of them, please come back and share them with the board here. We LOVE to see old quilts.

Suggestion...NEVER, ever sell anything to the one who appraises it. Too much temptation there. They know a lot about what they appraise because they love that kind of stuff. And want it.

Is there a reputable auction house near you that handles old quilts now and then? Anyway, go online and do some checking on eBay and on the Amish site, some of the prices would startle you.

Welcome to our site, ask away. There are talented folks from all over the world here and will help anyone in need.

Thanks for the info-----are there a lot of appraisers avaiable in the Dayton/Fairborn area (I live in Fairborn)??? If so, are they listed somewhere???----thanks------Dan

I gave you the link in my previous post.

MTS 04-21-2011 05:03 PM

Also, here's a link to the National Quilting Association.
http://nqaquilts.org/

They do certify appraisers (I thought) but I can't find the link.
However, judges and teachers are listed by state.

You might want to contact one of the judges in your area. I'm sure they would be able to give you some contacts.

Or contact the NQA directly.

Another option is to contact your local quilt guild. I don't know where you are so I can't help you. But a simple Google search will locate one in your area. The contact person would know who is in the area, or put you in contact with someone who will.

Here's a list of the Ohio quilt guilds. I have no idea how current it is.

That's all I got. Good luck.

Remember, we want pictures of the quilts.

The gal who owns our LQS, can appraise quilts. So I asked your shop & they may recommend someone.

grumpy90650 04-22-2011 09:04 AM

all good info.....

danjfalke 04-22-2011 02:52 PM

Thank you for the reply-------I don't know what "LQS" is and I don't understand that you asked the shop but they might recommend someone else???------thanks-----Dan

If you were to go to your local quilt shop (LQS), then they might also know someone who does appraisals.

You would find the LQS by doing a Google search, or looking in the phone book. The information is out there. ;-)

Hi Dan, I grew up in Fairborn and there is a guild that meets at the Fbn Senior Center. The Stitching Post in Centerville may be able to help you also.

You could also Google Quilt Shops in Ohio or Quilt Guilds in Ohio.

BTW, where did you go to school? My Dad is retired AF and my family is still in Fbn, Kettering.

danjfalke 04-22-2011 03:59 PM

Thanks Ellen-----I did college in Adrian, Mich and I graduated from high school in Danville, ILL. I moved around a lot as a kid and did schools in Ind., Sidney, Mich, Ontario and Ill------that was enough---just got here to Fairborn in 1997

ekbuckeye 04-22-2011 04:11 PM

Well, I had to ask since it's always fun to reconnect after so many years. And there are so many Yankees down here that the southerners don't like to admit to!
Good luck with your search for an appraiser. You could drive down to Paducah, KY this weekend - big quilt show this weekend.

danjfalke 04-22-2011 05:00 PM

Ok on the quilt show but I would have idea what to look for-----ha

Was the maple leaf quilt, part of your Ontario residency?

You've been given a lot of good info ... good luck!

danjfalke 04-24-2011 10:23 AM

It very well could have been---I really don't know---I was more interested in hockey back then rather than quilts-----ha
