I love the Hidden Wells pattern that is below but can't for the life of me figure out how big it turns out. Has anyone made this??
Thanks so much, I am really brain-dead :D

the first instruction is for a 12" finished blocks, the second one is for a 18" block :D:D:D

I've not made one, but I did find this online. Looked like it might be helpful with sizes.

Good luck!

If your strips add up to 9.5 inches wide, your block will be 12 inches.
If your strips add up to 14 inches, your block will be 18 inches.

Amma and Gaigai, I know the sizes, what I meant was how many strips would I need???
Do you know what I mean?

It will depend on how big you make your blocks, which depends on how big your strips are. The dimensions are give in the directions for the pattern. Are you going to use 12" or 18 " blocks; then how many blocks are you going to use? If you use 12" blocks and use 4 blocks in a row, you will have 48" across, plus any border use add on the outside of that. Does that help any?

I know what you're saying. I think I'm just going to have to make sure I have enough strips of 5-6 so that I can make it up the size I want. I'm worried about running out of fabric and the quilt not being large enough.
Thanks everyone :D:D:D

I bookmarked this one. I want to try it too. Great pattern.

Hi Sue, if I can remember back to when I made mine, each strip set, the width of the fabric makes 2 completed 12" blocks if you cut them into 9 1/2 "squares, so to make the quilt shown you will need 5 strip sets to make a quilt roughly 36" by 36" then add borders. I made 6 strip sets and made it 3 blocks by 4 blocks and added borders and ended up with a nice lap sized quilt. To make it bigger just add more blocks, so a 4 blocks by 5 blocks quilt will need 10 strip sets.
If you want to make the 18" block I think you will only get 1 block per strip set.
I hope this helps :?

I think what's goofing me up is by width do they mean across the sewn strips or the length of the sewn strips??
I am so dense!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D

gaigai 10-26-2010 08:53 PM

Sue, you can figure this out. Decide how big you want your quilt to be. Then decide whether you are going to make 12" or 18" blocks. Figure out how many blocks you need for the size you want.

Depending on the final block size, you cut your strip sets into squares of 9.5 or 14 inches. Divide the length of your fabric (about 40-42 inches) by whichever number you pick. That will tell you how many blocks you can get from one strip set. Divide this into the total number of blocks you need. Now take that number, and that is the number of strip sets you need. AND the number of each strips you need, assuming they are all different.

You will sew your strips of fabric to total either 9.5 or 14 inches. Then you will cut those long strips into squares, so you cut each width the exact same size as the length. Look at the photos.

amma 10-26-2010 09:36 PM

The width is the top of the strip set to the bottom of the strip set. (the shorter length of the strip set)
The length is the left to right (the longer length of the strip set)

Is this what you are asking?

sueisallaboutquilts 10-27-2010 09:31 AM
