I've been using the cutting mats from the Dollar Tree when they had three in a package. Now it's two but a great bargain! I do have to be more careful so I don't cut into them but I should be careful anyway. Blessings to all. Blessed Christmas. Kathryn

you can use a rotary cutter with the plexiglass because it thick enough I have found this to be a real cheap and easy way to get templates and they store well.

I had a friend who worked in a doctor's office several years ago. For some reason the office was throwing away never used X-Ray sheets. My friend scavaged them for quilting templets. I have never used them but she claims they work wonderfull for quilting templetes.

Wow! I've been pricing these and this is a wonderful ideal. Thanks.

They work like a charm...marked with sharpie type marker and cut very nicely with kitchen shears! No more expensive template plastic for me! You can also use the plastic pocket folders the kids use for school. I stock up at back to school time. 10 cents apiece and can get them in colors so you can have 21/2 in in blue, 3in in green. etc.

Thanks for the money saving hint.

The cutting mats you get at the Dollar Tree are for chopping vegetable and such in the kitchen. They never go into my kitchen but go straight to the sewing room. You will find them where the kitchen utensils are hanging up. The mats are usually lying flat on the bottom shelf.

OH thank you so much, I figured thats what you were talking about but just wasn't sure. Thanks

I use self gluing floor tiling they work great right height, and as long as you don''t cut pieces out of them, they can't be beat and you can always find them on sale or someone has a few laying around. they cut real easy with old scissors

One of the gals doing The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt with us recommended the clear frosted plastic binder dividers. They have a little colored scalloped edge on them. I think 10 sheets cost under $4.00. Very reasonable cost, and they work beautifully.

I can't just hop in the car and go and get something since I can't see well enough to drive anymore. So I have used the foam trays meats come on just wash well and dry. Also have used the cardbard from cereal boxes and for english piecing index cards work great.

I have used these mats for quite some time - in the kitchen. Now another use. These are flexible mats. Sometimes they come in colors other than clear. Also, sometimes have writing such as "meat", "veggies", etc. I buy them at Ocean State Job Lot. Try Big lots. Also some drugstores have them. Good luck in your search and thanks for the tip for quilting.

Great idea.

Great idea.

Plastic in meat cartons, milk cartons, any kind of clear plastic that I can salvage, I do a lot of applique, so small pieces are just fine, love to recycle and save $$$$
|

|
Thank you for the explanation and where to find them. :-)

I just got some of those for my Mom to use in the kitchen. I may need to use one for a template

I will remember this idea for using them for templates. I used to use the bacon insert, but we quit eating bacon! Thanks to all of you for all your clever ideas! Few items are one-use items any more. Creative minds put then to good use. Keep those ideas coming! |

I go to the glass store and have them laser cut plexiglass for my templates. They usually charge $2

I believe the original question was what can be used for the Karen Kay Buckley method of applique....I also use her method which requires the template to be heat resistant in order to press the fabric around this template after wetting it with Magic Sizing . Having said this which of the wonderful ideas given would be heat resistant so that it won't melt when a hot iron is applied?
Thanks, Sue |
Fabulous tip - thanks

Plexiglass works great. I give my husband the template cut out from paper and he takes it to his shop, cuts it out of thinner plexiglass and then glues a fine grade of sandpaper on the back. Works great.

I also use the acid free sheet protectors for my graphs when cross stitching - the top has a sticky edge so everything is protected in the pouch

I was planning on asking about template sources when you brought it up. I read awhile back on this site that someone used lucite and she bought it at Home Depot or Lowes. So if that is possible, then what would I cut it with? I have a new Dremel tool but may need to get a jig saw instead. Sure hope someone knows how to do this.
|
I don't know what plastic mats you are talking about. You don't mean the plastic dividers used for 3 ring binders?
|
They work great! Been using them for years now!
|
Another great source of clear template plastic is toy packages, actually any kind of packages. It's right there on the front, and all you have to do is take it off. It's what I use. Don't remember when I bought clear plastic template. I rack up at Christmas time cause all my friends (who haven't started doing the same thing) and my family save me the plastic from their packages. One of my grandchildren got a dollhouse for Christmas and I got a box full of plastic from the front of the dollhouse box and the furniture boxes.

You could run the bacon plastic through the dishwasher on the top rack.
