Hmm,bind blue or yellow?

What would you do? I have solid yellow, or the same blue used for the border.

For the back I scraped all the leftovers together :)

MamaBear61 07-07-2013 02:34 PM

I like the idea of yellow since it is the colour in the smallest amount in the quilt. Have you thought about a flange binding using a narrow strip of yellow and then blue. Here is a link to a tutorial;
http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/12...-tutorial.html

There is another method for flange binding using both colours and sewing them together first (one is slightly wider than the other) and then sewing on the binding. I know there is a tute for that too but I don't have the link.

I like the idea of the same blue or the stripe for the binding.

bigsister63 07-07-2013 02:42 PM

Yellow!!!!!

Tartan 07-07-2013 02:44 PM

On children's quilts I usually go for a darker binding so it doesn't show the dirt. :)

that's what I did to the last one I made!! http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...d-t224808.html
might have to do that again. I have a big piece of the blue left, but cut length wise, so no stretch :(
thats what I am pondering now.
thanks for the link on the tute! I might try to do it this way. the last one I made by sewing 2 colors together first.

This flange binding idea is great. I will have to try it on my I Spy quilt when the time comes. Thanks for the link.MammaBear61

??? Don't know how that happened - sorry

Peckish 07-07-2013 02:58 PM

I think a dark blue binding with a yellow flange would look very nice. I did a flange binding and really love how it turned out.

Oh that looks great!

dunster 07-07-2013 04:13 PM

The flange idea sounds great. The quilt back looks like a very nicely executed modern quilt. The top is wonderful too.

Painiacs 07-07-2013 06:30 PM

Yellow! Love yellow!!

QuiltnNan 07-07-2013 06:32 PM

i would use blue

narnianquilter 07-07-2013 06:33 PM

Yellow for sure! Makes it pop.

mountain-moma 07-07-2013 06:51 PM

Yellow............

jemma 07-07-2013 10:27 PM

can you get more of that multi stripe for the binding---the quilt is great

TeresaS 07-07-2013 10:51 PM

I like the darker blue. Very pretty quilt.

NJ Quilter 07-08-2013 03:40 AM

I like the idea of the yellow. I try to make my binding a color that I want to pull from the top to make it more visible and have more 'pop'.

teddysmom 07-08-2013 04:16 AM

I would go with the yellow.

gabeway 07-08-2013 04:35 AM

I'd go with blue.

mighty 07-08-2013 06:43 AM

Blue with yellow flange wounds really good!!!

Vat 07-09-2013 03:27 AM

The stripe cut on the bias would be my first chose. Or the same blue as to border or the dark blue.

localgirl1 07-09-2013 03:46 AM

bind with the dark blue.

twinkie 07-09-2013 04:02 AM

That is so cute. I love the flange binding idea.

Here is the link for the other tutorial. I used it to bind the wedding signature I finished last month. Loved it.

I'd bind it with the blue for these reasons:
  • the borders already change from dark to light to dark - a fourth change to a narrow light binding would be busy looking and detract from the center, not add to it
  • the same would be true for adding a light edge flange with a dark binding - too many outer changes on a small quilt especially
  • from a practical standpoint, bindings are the first to show grime, solid bindings even more so than prints - a solid yellow binding on a child's quilt is apt to look soiled one day out of the laundry
  • most popular solid fabrics (broadcloths) have a lesser thread count than prints (60 square compared to 75 square) and, when used as binding on a heavily used/laundered quilt, can show wear much faster than the body

So, that's why I'd bind it in the matching blue, not the yellow nor the yellow edge flange. It's very pretty, nice job. Whatever you decide will be very well loved indeed. :)

petpainter 07-09-2013 04:39 AM

I like the dark blue as it draws the eye in- or the stripe cut on the bias would be fun!

Bobbielinks 07-09-2013 04:48 AM

My preference would be the darker blue. But whatever you decide will be great.

tessagin 07-09-2013 04:53 AM

I like a darker binding on most quilts. Same for this.

DebbieG 07-09-2013 06:01 AM

I'd do the stripe....I bind a ton of my quilts with a stripe that has the colors of the quilt in it....even if I don't have a stripe in the quilt itself.

Tudey 07-09-2013 06:15 AM

Personally, I find that if I use a light color, like yellow, for a binding, it tends to get dirty quicker, or at least show dirt quicker, on a quilt that is used a lot, like a baby quilt. I vote for the blue!

cpcarolyn 07-09-2013 07:45 AM

Great quilt. Yellow would frame it nicely.

klgls 07-09-2013 08:01 AM

Yellow or the flange one. Cute quilt!

linhawk 07-09-2013 08:02 AM

Like the idea of a yellow flange but favor the darker blue for the main part of the binding.
I just like darker bindings.

Rose_P 07-09-2013 09:24 AM

I agree with those who say the stripe, if you have enough, would be best. Yellow seems like too much contrast and blue seems okay but wouldn't do anything special for it. In quilts as in flower arranging, having three of something eye catching brings a pleasing balance.

MacThayer 07-09-2013 04:34 PM

If that were my quilt, I'd use the very dark blue for binding. I like contrast between the binding and the border. In this case, the dark blue would "frame" the quilt nicely. If you want to put a border of yellow on first, that would be great and would make the dark blue stand out even more but without being overbearing.

That's just my humble opinion. BTW your quilt is really pretty!

nananurse 07-09-2013 06:16 PM

Yellow for my vote.

rebeljane 07-09-2013 10:44 PM

I vote for yellow!
