I like the idea of using home dec. fabric for the backing because of its width. I've wanted to do that but wondered if it would not be soft enough. Would you use it on a lap quilt? Thanks for any information.

I used home dec. fabric for the backing of a lap quilt which was donated to a veterans hospital. It worked perfectly fine. I prewashed it, used it and all was fine. I quilted it very simply- large hearts in each pieced square. No problems. The fabric was 100% cotton.

That's a great help; thanks a lot!

I used a 100% cotton decorator fabric for a lap quilt back. It is a little thicker than regular quilt fabric. I machine quilted it in the design I wanted and it came out fine. I washed the quilt to remove the chalk lines and the decorator fabric is not as soft as regular cotton fabric but was still nice. I certainly wouldn't have used it if I planned to hand quilt.

I use freq use it.... Just need to make sure it is machien washable ( I rarely dry clean anything) ALL 100 decorator fabric is NOT washable friendly.

It's a little bit lighter weight than some denims, which are sometimes used in quilts. I don't see why not!

I have used home dec fabric even in a pieced top. It was only slightly heavier than quilters cotton and when pieced you can't tell the difference. Marsha McCloskey uses home dec in pieced tops often. Just be aware of the weight and fiber content. I have bought home dec fabric at thrift stores and washed it to see how it behaves.
