Homemade sew steady
I can imagine with all the clever people here, some have made sew steadies?

What is it?

Sew Steady is a brand of plexiglas surface extension table to use when your machine sits on the cabinet or table. Some of the adaptations can be used to fill in a dropped surface, and not all of them are plexiglas. My Sew Steady table is over 25 years old and very basic, not enough leg supports. I've seen many photos of home made tables and inserts, some on here. Patsy Thompson has a series of videos on free motion quilting, and in "Fast and Free" volume 2, her husband shows how to build your own extension table.

I had one to fit another machine. A customer of our business re cut the opening to fit my Juki. I use it all the time.
|
I had pressed wood cut out so my Bernina would sit in my old Singer desk.

My hubby made me one from heavy plexiglas to fit my Pfaff a couple yrs ago. We ordered adjustable legs and it works like a retail one. We have maybe 20-25$ in it. He did great! I'm keeping him.

Unless you have a special configuration, most any of the extension table companies will have one that fits. DH does woodworking and acrylic work for his hobby. Asking him to make something like this will be the same as him asking me to replace a zipper. I'd do it but rather not and he'd do it but rather not. He is getting a 3D printer (equivalent to a LA for me) so maybe making acrylic and plastic things made will be cinch. I don't know enough about it.

I saw one some years ago...the woman used Styrofoam (maybe 2 layers of 2" thickness) and made it the size of her sewing table and the height of her sewing machine bed then covered it with heavy duty flexible plastic to make it smooth on top. Try Googling "how to make a cheap sewing table" and see what pops up.

We remodeled our kitchen and my husband made several to fit three of my machines out of the old countertop. He adjusted the height to each machine using 1/2 inch dowels. He drilled a divet in the back of the countertop and glued in the dowels. I love them. One of them was really big to hold the big quilts when I free motion quilt.
