Homespun fabrics
 

I found all these homespun fabrics at a thrift store and wanted to use them in a quilt. I have never sewn with homespun before and was wondering if you enlarge the seam allowance from the normal quilting seam of 1/4” to allow for the fraying. It would be a lot of work to put a anti-seam fray product on all the seams to prevent fraying or do I not bother to worry about that happening? Hope the picture is not enormous. I don’t know how to resize it on my IPad.

What a lovely assortment of Homespuns you got! I made this quilt out of nothing but homespuns and used a standard 1/4" seam allowance with no issues. The cat's ears are 1 1/2" UF HST on the large cats and 1" U/F on the little cats. Reduce your stitch length and quilt sufficiently (this one was a 2" grid done on point) and I don't think you will have any issues with fraying. My homespuns were all across the board, from LQS to walmart.

I used homespun quite a bit, just used my standard seam allowance and didn't have many issues. I usually paired it with a good woven solid.

Still throw it in my scrap quilts as well, just acts like any other fabric.

Here's a top I pieced for my father in law, sadly he died before I got it quilted down.

A regular 1/4" seam will be fine. This quilt is all made from homespuns and brushed plaid flannel. I'm a prewasher and these were mostly gifted to me, so I starched the fabric before cutting. This accomplishes 2 things...you find those fabrics that will bleed and it often shrinks the fabric a bit. The finished quilt has been washed and dried and is for my oldest GS for his college dorm room next year.

Those are pretty fabrics.

I think the homespuns (we used to call them "woven plaids") vary from fairly tightly woven - like "regular" quilting cotton to being very loosely woven.

I would overcast the edges, soak them in hot water to shrink them, and then gently wash and dry them before cutting.

Beautiful quilt! I've never seen this pattern before.

I did one with homespuns and used 1/4" seam allowance. I did use Best Press on it as I pieced. As long as you aren't handling them a lot, your blocks should not fray anymore than other cottons.

Depending upon the pattern you plan to make, you could use a serger. Easy peasy .

I would also recommend prewashing homespuns. Unless your making a rag quilt. Man can they ever shrink.
