Are all homespuns plaid? and woven? The ones I have seen are woven.....do they do well in a quilt? Do you have to do anything special with them?
What are shirtings? Are shirting good for a quilt? |
homespuns are not always plaid- homespuns are always a woven fabric and behaves much like flannel in quilts- make wonderful quilts and are very nice to work with. the shrinkage is more than regular cottons- just like flannels. as for shirtings- shirting cottons tend to be a much lighter weight fabric than what we normally choose for quilting- that does not mean they can not be used- they are just a lighter weight fabric. sometimes if i am mixing fabrics and want to include any shirtings i just use a fusable interfacing to give them a bit more weight

Thanks for the questions and the answer.. Love this forum..

This is good to know.. I've been cutting up old shirts and noticing how much thinner the fabric is, but hadn't thought about using a lightweight interfacing. Thank you!

Thanks for the tip on the shirtings, I was just given a bunch of squares and about half of them are the light weight shirt fabric.
Would you tell us which interfacing is best to use. |
