"Honey, could you please go to the basement and get the pliers so I can...

pull this needle out of my finger?"

Yes, I joined the club.

Lesson: do not try to smooth out the water soluble topping while the machine is stitching. Happily, it was a 75/11 and not some monster needle.
:)

Ouch, I feel your pain. I stitched the end of my thumb yesterday. I had my fingers too close while trying to make sure the binding was where I wanted! Hope your finger is okay.

Kitsie 05-30-2012 08:30 AM

Oooh, sorry! Hope he was gentle!

QuiltnLady1 05-30-2012 08:36 AM

OOHHH!! That hurts!! We have a whooping cough epidemic here and hubby needed to get a shot. When he asked why my shots were up to date I told him it was because of all the sharp things in my sewing room that were always inserting themselves into my skin (I also keep pliers and a first aide kit since I could bleed to death before he hears me call him).

Hope you heal fast.

erstan947 05-30-2012 09:01 AM

Mercy, watch out for those pesky needles......and rotary cutters, and ..........
I don't seem to be able to make a quilt without getting blood on it one time or another:(

LadyElisabeth 05-30-2012 09:13 AM

Rotary cutters are something else we use carefully.

mighty 05-30-2012 12:51 PM

I am so sorry!!!!!!

cmw0829 05-30-2012 03:48 PM

Thanks everybody. I'm not even sure it hurt, it happened so fast. I had to do the extraction myself.

Fortunately, no blood on the white fabric!

Raggie, ouch!! I hope your thumb heals quickly.

SueSew 05-30-2012 03:49 PM

oh so sorry hope you don't get infection Brave Quilter!!!

Tink's Mom 05-30-2012 03:55 PM

Hope you don't do it again...Ouch! I hate to admit this, but...I have done this too many times...I keep pliers in my cup with the other scissors. I also keep several band-aids with the first covering already off with a rubberband to the cup..

momto5 05-30-2012 04:18 PM

I've joined your ranks...only with a long arm...fun, fun, fun!

kateyb 05-31-2012 05:31 AM

It has been a few year since I sewed my finger. I have also dropped my rotary cutter when open while barefoot. I wear shoes when cutting now.

Ditto. When I first started taking quilting lessons & learned about the rotary cutter, the lady at my LQS told me: "now this is go to the hospital sharp. Be careful."

SouthPStitches 05-31-2012 06:13 AM

So we can consider quilting an Extreme Sport?!

SuzyQ 05-31-2012 06:54 AM

Ouch! I'm happy to say I haven't joined this club ... yet! Hope your finger is better today! I am a member of the cutting the end off your finger with the rotary cutter club though LOL

Nanaquilts44 05-31-2012 07:46 AM

Oh I hope your finger is feeling better now. I am always afraid I will do that too! Take care.

Tartan 05-31-2012 08:16 AM

Ooooowie! It does happen so fast that it doesn't hurt going in, it's the taking it out that smarts!!!! I saw a story on the news this week about a beautiful baby girl that just died from whopping cough. They say for adults you should get your shots updated every 10 years. I know it's been more than that for me so I am going to update. Babies can't get their shot until 2months so they are vulnerable if they are exposed.

MaryLane 05-31-2012 01:54 PM

Ouch! I don't think I have ever sewn my finger. I did tear up one right after I got my embroidery machine by reaching down before it was done cutting the thread and pulling it out of the way. No needle, just the mechanism.

But, I am a frequent flier with the rotary cutter. Somehow I seem to knick my knuckles a lot.

irishrose 05-31-2012 02:31 PM

I buried a needle in the bone when sewing a silk organza wedding dress, so not bleeding on it was a priority. I sat there attached to the machine and called for my sleeping family. No luck, so I had to reach around with my free hand and remove the needle. I woke my husband with a needle in one hand and pliers in the other. I remember it throbbing for a few days. My sympathy to you.

!!!!!

That's horrifying! I have sewn my finger (just flesh) once or twice, but generally get more injured while handquilting - the bottom hand gets pricked so often that it bleeds. I've also had several thimble failures where the needle ended up embedded in my finger...through the thimble. Thus I know that a person's own saliva contains the necesary enzymes to dissolve their own blood. Next time you bleed on your fabric, drool all over it and you will not have a stain.

Ouch, ouch!

susie-susie-susie 05-31-2012 04:08 PM

I have only sewn my finger once, but when I hand sew, somehow I manage to sew my finger into the back of the project. I haven't figured that one out yet. When I worked (as a RN) I was often stabbing myself with needles and IV needles. My shots were always up to date, and I know I don't have any diseases (frequent blood tests). Now that I'm retired, I have to keep the shots up to date. A couple of days ago I dropped my scissors. They always land on my foot pointed side down. So far no stab wound, but it happens often and usually when I'm barefoot. Also, my DH always finds any dropped pins by stepping on them. He thinks I drop them on purpose.

And who says what we do isn't dangerous! Oh, if people only knew the hazards we endure for the thing we love!!! Hope your finger is okay. It makes me hurt just thinking about it!

ugh....ouch...did not see that coming...hope you heal quickly!

ShabbyTabby 06-01-2012 12:45 PM

So sorry about your OUCH. I'm such a klutz at so many things but thank goodness (knock on wood) so far I have been able to keep my fingers from being impaled. I have gotten them stuck on pins in fabrics (causing the air to turn blue) and that hurt so can just imagine how much pain would be inflickted with a needle!! Hope you heal quickly.

spokanequilter 06-01-2012 12:57 PM

Oh, you guys are making me get that squeamish feeling all over!! I've done the sewing machine needle, thousands of pins and many, many rotary cutter slices... First aid kid in the cutting table drawer for sure - but I hadn't thought about the pliers before. Great tip!!

Latrinka 06-01-2012 02:07 PM

Ooooh weee! That hurts! I've done it too! Sewed right through my left pointer fingernail! OUCH!

RonieM 06-01-2012 05:09 PM

I've been there and done that - not once but twice. Both times I was sewing late at night and was just getting too tired. The first time I really panicked because the needle broke and I couldn't find part of it. Thought it was stuck in my finger, but found it in the fabric.

Helen S 06-02-2012 02:22 PM

Yeeeeooowwww!

Caswews 06-02-2012 06:04 PM

Eons ago, when my DS was in grade school, I was going on a field trip with his class to the zoo. I was sewing before it was time to go, glanced up at the clock to see how much more time I had & sewed not only thru my thumb, but thru the actual nail. No blood. Yikes! I was scared to pull the needle out, for fear that blood would start spurting all over the kitchen, but I knew I couldn't take a gaggle of 5th graders to the zoo with a needle sticking out of my thumb, so I pulled it out. No blood... none. No pain... none. I kept expecting "the other shoe to drop" but all these years later, nothing. Whew!

I'm glad you survivev your run-in with Mr. Needle!

emlee51 06-03-2012 06:33 AM

When I read these posts about needles in the fingers I sew really slow that day...sew far, sew good.....
