Has anyone used a honeybun to make a log cabin? Just wondering if it is a good idea.

OK, stupid question: What's a honeybun?

CorgiNole 06-11-2010 08:14 AM

Like a Jellyroll but the strips are narrower - I think 1.5 inches versus 2.5.

I think it would make the trimming for the log cabin quilt exponentially easier if one is planning a quilt with one inch (finished) logs.

Cheers, K

This is an awesome site ... I plan to come back to The Missouri Quilt Co. when I can watch some of the tutorials. Thanks!

This is my favorite quilt site. I order from them all the time.
The owner, Jenny, who is in many of the videos always puts a handwritten note in the package, too!

Sure!!! Why not!! If that is the size logs that you want to use than go for it!

I have. Found 2 half price last fall. Flag Day Farm collection I think. I'm on my way to take DD to work, will post a pic when I get back.

Honeybuns are great for log cabin blocks.

I found 2 honeybuns for half price last fall. It was one of those purchases that I really didn't know what I was going to do with. My dining room is red, white, and blue, so this is what I came up with. I took all the scraps from the blocks and made the border. I had maybe 3-4 inches of fabric left. I had to use packaged binding cause there was nothing left.
I use it as a table topper on an antique drop leaf table.

sure, why wouldn't it be a good idea? after all, they are all cut for you, so a time saver, and usually coordinated...i think it sounds like a great time saving idea

momymom-your quilt is lovely! I am convinced. I am going to buy some honeybuns and do a log cabin!!

momymom 06-11-2010 03:07 PM

Thanks, glad you like it.

wvdek 06-11-2010 03:48 PM

Beautiful and patriotic topper.
In answer to your question, I have not.

littlehud 06-11-2010 06:47 PM

I think it would be great. I say go for it.

Beautiful quilt! Can you tell me the dimentions of your log cabin quilt? I am trying to figure out if I need to buy additional honey buns. I have two of Moda's summer fun.

Also, did you cut the logs to size or do it the quilt-in-a-day method?

Thanks!

momymom 06-14-2010 03:27 PM

It is 40 x 53. I use the QID. I make alot of strip peaced quilts. Instant gratification!!!!

vgreene 06-14-2010 04:02 PM

Thanks! Maybe I'll go out to see if the quilt shop still has more. Unfortunately, they are having a going-out-of-business sale.

I did one with a jelly roll and the "Marti Mitchell - My Favorite Log Cabin Ruler." The ruler made the cutting so easy! I took a class. We began by sorting lights and darks then cut the strips using the ruler. Each strip was cut into six pieces and oe strip was cut as the center block. We were able to chain piece the blocks and made most of them in a six hour class!
It was great fun. I gave it to my DS and DDIL as an anniversary gift!
Blessings.

Beautiful ! Just wondering what size your blocks were? I have found a patter for a log cabin trying to figure how many honey buns I would need to do it.

ckcowl 07-16-2012 03:35 PM

sure- why not??? log cabin blocks can be made with any width logs you want- some people like them 1" wide- some a little wider- some really wide- sometimes a variety of widths- a honey bun would be a great way to work on one---all the strips pre-cut for you and (hopefully) straight- makes that log-cabin go faster.

Jenny Doan has a tutorial using a honey bun for a log Cabin. Go to UTube or MSQ web site

B Sisson 12-10-2014 10:17 AM

on you tube they have a curvy log cabin done with a jellyroll and a honeybun. It's really pretty.

caspharm 12-10-2014 03:47 PM

I am using them for making log cabins for a BOM UFO that I am working on. They definitely save time, especially if it a roll from a line that I may not commonly use or have in my stash.

ManiacQuilter2 12-10-2014 03:55 PM

As long as your log cabin pieces are going to be 1" finished, I see no reason why not to use them

Katiedid2 12-14-2014 04:28 PM

used honey buns and jelly roll for curved log cabin
