Horizontal Sashing
Has anyone ever had to piece horizontal sashing? My quilt is 53 or 54 inches in width but, my sashing fabric is 43 so I either need to find a different fabric that is at least 54" in length (I've never used the length of fabric for horizontal sashing) or piece the fabric that I have. Your opinions are very much needed. Thanks.

Yes, I have pieced borders many times. I usually buy enough yardage, so that I can have one length for my borders, both horizontal and vertical.

Quilting is about piecing. I piece whatever I need to. If the material has a very definitive pattern, I try to match the pattern up so that the piecing isn't obvious. If there is no pattern, then I just piece it and go. Once the quilting has been done, you won't even notice it.
All that being said, I don't piece within a couple of inches of the length of the sashing (or border). I try to add at least 6 inches or more. You will have at least 10 inches, so it should not be noticeable once you have the quilting done. |
When I piece sashing I stagger the seams so they're not all in the same area.

Thanks so much. I knew I would get good answers from this Board!

I have pieced sashing and it works best with darker fabric so the seam is less noticeable. I also think about my quilting in the sashing, is there a way that the quilting can SITD of the join? I piece straight if I am going to put a straight line of quilting through it or on the diagonal if I plan to quilt diamonds shapes.

sure--just make sure the piecing line doesn't line up all the way down the quilt.
