Household Essentials Fibertech Ironing Boards - any thoughts?
 

Hi, I've been wanting a new ironing board for a while - wider than 14" - and in my infinite (not) wisdom just gave my son my old board for his first apartment. What was I thinking?? Now I have no ironing board and can't decide what to choose.

Ultimately, I'll make a big board type attachment but for space purposes need a regular board that can be folded up.

I've seen the above-mentioned product - 18" wide - and wonder if anyone has used them. The Fibertech material is not what I'm accustomed to so I'm wondering if anybody has any thoughts on how well it works for steam ironing and how durable it is. It gets very good reviews on Amazon but not sure how well it works for quilters.

I don't know what the Fibertech board is but I use a piece of plywood covered with two bath towels and a large piece of white cotton and leave it on top of three storage towers. This works pretty good for me . Hope this helps.

For quilting/sewing I use a towel folded on top of my cutting table. I can either clear the table and use the whole thing for ironing large pieces or have the towel folded at one end and cutting mat at the other. For clothing, I have a small traditionally shaped board that DH cut, attached with a piano hinge to my linen closet door. Just put a commercial ironing board cover over it and good to go. Folds out of the way when I don't need it...which is most of the time!

I don't know but they sure are expensive. I have been using one of the drop down ironing boards and decided I might like to go back to a freestanding. This after giving mine away years ago and passing on two inherited old school ironing boards. I find the decent ones are running $159 now. I guess I will keep using the drop down. Good luck.

Look for a 'new' one at garage sales. The ones made in the 50's & 60's are so much sturdier than most of the ones made today (unless you want to spend over $100) I got a Mary Proctor double flip for $3.

That board seems to have pretty good reviews other than the packaging and shipping problems. I had a board with that style of legs and it's very, very stable. The board I had was a wire mesh and eventually it warped in the center and wasn't flat anymore. The price of the Fibertech board is less than what I paid for the board I bought over 10 years ago.

I got rid of my ironing board completely. I bought a long dresser at a second hand store for $15 and a piece of plywood. I had the plywood cut and wrapped it in batting and cotton and put it on the dresser. Now I have an ironing board with storage. Lots of drawers for fabric and things. Best thing I ever did!!!!

My decision is on hold. I'm considering what jcrow did and can't make up my mind.

In the meantime, I bought a used ironing board through Craigslist. I almost scored the Fibertech board on CL for $20 but the seller was selling his stuff as a lot.

The fibre top is very thin1/8inch. And very soft which means it rips very easily. So a new top immediately .
